Cambridge Wireless presents the Inaugural Launch of the Digital Broadcasting and Multimedia SIG. Championed by Tristan Barkley of TTP Group, Graham Norgett of Cellmetric, Keith Cheshire of Motorola and Tim Cook of Arqiva. We are delighted to have received the sponsorship of TTP Group for this important event.
During 2008 a whole “storm” was played out around a topic, ‘Behavioural Targeting Technology’, and a company called Phorm appeared frequently in the press spotlight.
Telecoms companies, struggling to find any way to monetise ever increasing low cost bandwidth, hopped aboard the trend. Many consumer facing companies see their ability to profile their customers as a star asset, ideal for “mining” to the full. Personalised advertising was hinted at as something that would be with us shortly via a number of platforms. As consumers, do we want to have our location monitored and to be “bombarded” with commercials that are “tailored” for our viewing? The acceptance of these could see us viewing content/using services at a reduced subscription.
However, the flip side of this nirvana is the substantive rules and regulations of Data Protection. Trust in data protection was not enhanced in 2008 with the frequent leaks/ losses of personal data from government organisations, entrusted with safekeeping. So are we willing to let supposed less respected organisations share our data/”habits”/profiles with organisations that are out to “make a buck” at any cost?
