A 2012 government White Paper, National Security Through Technology (Cmd 8278), restated our government's commitment to suppliers to the security and defence markets which, for the first time, are considered and addressed as a single market. In the paper, the importance of open procurement, preservation of technology advantage and reliance upon innovation by small to medium enterprises (SMEs) is stressed. Even prime or Tier 1 contractors are being pressed to involve more SMEs in their responses to the market. These businesses are precisely those typified by the Cambridge Wireless membership.
For our next Security & Defence SIG event we will be exploring, from both the customer and supplier points of view how this involvement can be achieved. We intend to gain the government viewpoint from both MOD and Home Office - Dstl, Centre for Defence Enterprise (CDE) and Centre for Applied Science and Technology (CAST) - and the supplier viewpoint from small, medium and large businesses to see whether the message of the white paper is being delivered.
Confirmed speaker organisations include:
- "The challenges and opportunities of policing in a data rich changing world" - Tim Godwin OBE QPM, Defence and Public Safety, Accenture
- "Man Worn Power and Data – An SME led project for the MOD" - John Frankham, Technical Lead, Cosworth
- "An SME Perspective on Engaging in Innovation for Defence Markets" - Henk Koopmans, CMO, Plextek
- "Effective Communications to the Tactical Edge" - Scott Scheimreif, Executive Vice President of Government Programmes, Iridium
- "Security and Policing – a Home Office Science Perspective" - Chris Rampton, Capability Adviser Surveillance, CAST, Home Office
- "Opportunities for Innovative Research in Defence" - Jonathan Byrne, Head of CDE, Centre for Defence Enterprise (CDE)
- "Open Forum" Additional Panellist, Anthony Dyhouse, ICT KTN
This half day event will also be addressed by an experienced retired senior security official. This concise event will provide an invaluable insight into this emerging field and provide a well-rounded view of how businesses are responding to this challenge.
