Small Cell SIG ’Let's Get Real!'

Start date/time :  12:00 31st January 2013
End date/time :  17:00 31st January 2013
Venue :  Eversheds, 1 Wood Street, London, EC2V 7WS

This Small Cell event will take a hard look at the challenges facing operators, brought about by increased data traffic, including site selection and its acquisition, backhaul, power, installation and commissioning as well as the ensuing regulatory issues to achieve successful metro cell deployment. This half-day commences with lunch and will feature five specialist speakers, confirmed speakers include Peter Claydon of Airspan, Andy Sutton of EE, Kevin Baughan of Virgin Media Business, Mike Lawton of Agilent Technologies and Peter Love of Nokia Siemens Networks, concluding with a full panel discussion.

Mobile network operators are facing rapidly escalating data capacity demands that are predicted to increase multifold by 2020. The industry is gearing towards a 1000x increase in data traffic.

Small cells that are owned and managed by operators and deployed in dense urban areas as part of HetNets (heterogeneous network) to cost-effectively improve capacity, are widely accepted as a key solution for meeting growing capacity demands. However, such deployments present MNOs with a number of challenges that must be addressed before their full benefits can be realised.

This Small Cells SIG meeting ‘Let’s get real!’ looks at the challenges beyond the radio, including site selection and acquisition, backhaul, power, installation and commissioning, as well as regulatory and other issues that have to be covered off for a successful metro cell deployment.

This half-day event will begin with registration over lunch followed by five speaker sessions, and rounded off by a group panel discussion.  Early booking is highly recommended due to the popularity of this series.

Presentations will be heard from:

  • Andy Sutton, Principal Network Architect, EE - 'Sharing Knowledge from EE Small Cell Backhaul Trials'
  • Peter Claydon, Managing Director, Airspan Communications - "Experiences with Non-Line-of-Sight Wireless Backhaul for LTE Picocell Deployments"
  • Kevin Baughan, Director of Metro Wireless, Virgin Media Business - “Small Cells: From Trials to Deployment”
  • Mike Lawton, Product Planner, Agilent Technologies -  “From Angst to Ambivalence to Acceptance: The Story of how Cellular has Evolved to Embrace Wifi”
  • Peter Love, Head of Network Optimisation West & South Europe, Nokia Siemens Networks - “Small Cells – Great Expectations. An Operational Performance Perspective”
