About the event

The third Big Data SIG event will focus on technological choices for creating Big Data solutions, with a particular emphasis on open source. This timely half-day event will be exploring available open source solutions, provide insight into reasons behind selecting certain technologies over others and present real-world experiences of exploiting open source for Big Data applications.

The Big Data SIG is championed by Claus Bendtsen of AstraZeneca, Phil Claridge of JSDU UKDana Pavel of TecVis and Rob Symes of The Outside View.

Miika Ahdesmaki - Senior Director, Early Data Science, AstraZeneca, Former Associate Principal Informatics Scientist at AstraZeneca, Unaffiliated

Mary-Ann Claridge - Founder, Mandrel Systems

Mary-Ann is the Lead data scientist at Mandrel Systems. She started her career with research into sonar (think Hunt for Red October without Sean Connery). She is now embracing application and technical domains including education (all the analysis, modelling and visualisation for BestCourse4Me), smart city, retail, voice and speech recognition, and financial and logistical optimisation.

Dana Pavel

Dana has been working in the area of context-aware computing for more than 15 years, both in industry research and academia, her work including sensing and context gathering platforms for connected smart environments, data modelling and processing, software agents, adaptive software and interfaces. She has multiple research publications and patents in areas related to context-aware computing.

More recently, Dana has been focusing on designing and building personal wellbeing experience platforms, spanning all areas from data gathering to data processing and visualisations. In this, she has been working with University of Essex, University of Cambridge, and various industry partners. Dana was one of the Co-founders and General Partner of TecVis LP and she is currently the Director of tech4wellbeing ltd.
