In recent years, sensor developments have spurred an increased development and deployment of solutions (e.g., SunSPOT, Intel Mote), integrations into products (e.g., mobile phone sensors, gaming solutions) and usage in many scenarios (e.g. environmental monitoring, healthcare, transport solutions, gaming).
But most of these developments are bespoke point solutions, hardly enabled to interconnect or communicate beyond their intended boundaries.
It is, however, increasingly recognized that interconnecting these disparate systems as well as integrating other available data sources could potentially increase our ability to make sense of our world in many ways (e.g., see UK government initiative set up by the Power of Information task force). Impacts on policy making in various areas, informing citizens of their surrounding, navigating our environment, fighting climate change are only a few examples for the expected benefits for such interconnected sensor and data world.
The Cambridge Wireless SIG on Wireless Sensing provides a unique opportunity to bring together Cambridge Wireless members and others, nationally or internationally, who have an interest in the system aspects of wireless sensing. We organise events and encourage networking among the participants. The SIG is intended for anyone from the wireless and communication technology or particular vertical solution markets for wireless sensing interested in the convergence of these technology applications and markets. This SIG is championed by:
Dirk Trossen of Cambridge University
Eiman Kanjo of Cambridge Mobile Sensing
Simon Loe of Alcatel-Lucent.
Rob Blake of Philips Research UK
Wireless Sensing SIG: 15th December 2009. "Uncovering the Potential of Wireless Sensing"
"Pervasive Wireless Sensing: Who needs it?" - David Crellin, Sciencescope
"Sensing the Future" - John Hunter, Zimiti

Joint Wireless Sensing SIG and Short Range Wireless SIG, "Sensing from Radio" This event discusses in depth where wireless itself provides the transduction, and possibly the data carrier too. This SIG will showcase the features available, discuss the potential business implications and applications and share expert knowledge regarding this new avenue of development.PLEASE CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE DRAFT AGENDA This half-day event is championed by Tim Whittaker of Cambridge Consultants, Peter George and Antony Rix of TTP from the Short Range Wireless SIG and Rob Blake of Philips Research UK, Dirk Trossen of Cambridge University, Eiman Kanjo of Cambridge Mobile Sensing and Simon Loe of Alcatel Lucent from the Wireless Sensing SIG. We are also very grateful to Rohde & Schwarz for sponsoring this event. Wireless systems have been an invaluable part of sensing and telemetry for a long time, and will continue to provide cost savings, and also to enable completely new applications, for the foreseeable future. However, the radio system itself can be used for sensing and measuring things like location, medical phenomena, even the weather. In this joint session of the Short-Range Wireless and Sensing SIGs we will present a range of topics where wireless itself provides the transduction, and possibly the data carrier too.
As well as providing transport for data, a wireless link can work as a sensor, delivering information about weather and the environment, location of devices, and other more specialised measurements. Speakers will discuss in depth applications where wireless itself detects and measures physical phenomena, often as a free by-product of the data transport. Our sponsor, Rohde & Schwarz, is a long-standing expert in this area, and other contributors use sensing by wireless as a significant part of their businesses. This SIG will showcase the features available, discuss the potential business implications and applications and share expert knowledge regarding this new avenue of development.

This event provides an excellent platform to examine the newest application developments surrounding radio and other related topics. This is combined with ample time to network and discuss with leading experts in this field, factors that make this event unmissable. Events are FREE to Cambridge Wireless Members. Tickets for non-members are £150.00 plus VAT.
