Connected Devices SIG

The Cambridge Wireless Connected Devices Special Interest Group focuses on applications, systems and underlying technologies of wireless communication where the end device is a machine or other device that’s not a handset.  The group's scope encompasses the concepts of Machine to Machine (M2M) communication and the Internet of Things from the perspectives of key applications, systems design and technology. This includes wide-area networking (WAN), standard cellular communications, satellite systems and broadband, and where required local-area networking (LAN), Bluetooth, Near-Field Communications (NFC), Ultra Wide-Band (UWB), Wi-Fi, Zigbee, and other less well-known standards. Proprietary radio systems are also considered along with the data centre and back-office systems required to deliver the actual end-to-end service that customers and service providers require.

This SIG is championed by the following people:

Antony Rix of TTPTim Whittaker of Cambridge Consultants, Nick Hunn of Onzo and Paul Green of Arkessa.

The group seeks to:
  • showcase and promote the use of wireless communications in a broad range of markets including consumer electronics, enterprises, healthcare, industry, smart energy and security
  • address the modern trend toward ubiquitous connectivity, examining its benefits and costs
  • share knowledge between developers and users of the technology both on the available standards and on relevant proprietary technologies
  • share expertise on development issues such as product certifications, qualification and export licence controls
  • explore new business opportunities for members in these technologies and their applications.
The SIG aims to hold 2-3 meetings each year in Cambridge, as well as occasional events elsewhere in the UK and Europe.

Connected Devices SIG: 'Advances in Short-range Wireless for Mass-Market Applications'

This half-day SIG will be demonstrating Bluetooth Low Energy and its ability to link small sensor devices to the internet through smartphones. With barriers constantly being broken down in this field, enhancement in performance is available in several key areas with improvements in range and new applications a reality. This afternoon provides an excellent opportunity to keep abreast of the latest developments available. Presentations will be heard from; Richard Walker of TTP, Paul Williamson of CSR, Mikko Savolainen of Bluegiga, Matthias Sicard of EnergyMicro, Robert Milner of Cambridge Consultants, John Corbett of EnOcean, Matthew Steinberg of GoSense Wireless, Marion Kost of Texas Instruments and Paul Padden of Toumaz Microsystems Ltd.

Short-range wireless communication has quietly entered the mainstream, with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi exceeded only by cellular technologies in the number of devices sold. Bluetooth Low Energy (a required component of Bluetooth 4.0) is now being integrated by major phone vendors and will be demonstrated at this event linking small sensor devices to the Internet through leading smartphones.  Software stacks such as Bluetooth Health Device Profile are now supported by several vendors, greatly reducing the barrier to entry. Driven by markets such as energy, silicon vendors have produced new transceivers offering enhanced performance in several key areas, improving range and enabling new applications.
    Confirmed speakers:
    • Richard Walker, Head of Wireless at TTP
    • Paul Williamson, Product Marketing Manager at CSR
    • Mikko Savolainen, VP of Products at Bluegiga
    • Matthias Sicard, Director of Sales at Energy Micro

There will also be short presentations on new developments and applications of short-range wireless. Talks will be heard from:

This afternoon event will provide excellent networking opportunities and an up-to-date view on the latest developments. Consistently popular, booking is highly recommended for this popular event.
