Handsets

This Handset SIG is championed by:

Abhi Naha from Idem
Peter Whale from Qualcomm

The mission of the SIG is to have over 70% of a best selling handset’s components designed or supplied by Cambridge Wireless members. By ‘components’ we mean hardware, software and services and we aim to achieve this mission by:

  • Keeping members aware of the latest technology and application trends, news and who's who in the handset industry.
  • Introducing members to key decision makers in the handset industry
  • Promoting the members' capabilities at local and international levels to targeted keyhandset players.
  • Growing membership to include keyplayers in the mobile handset industry.

We aim to achieve this in a collaborative environment of trust, openness and spirit of good will.

Video killed the radio star: mobile handsets and the personal video player revolution. Inaugural Joint Handset & Mobile TV SIG

Cambridge Wireless presents the inaugural joint Handset and Mobile TV SIG event exploring key aspects of handset design & manufacture for global markets in exploring a 'one size fits all' concept with the top leaders in the field.

We are delighted to announce this premiere joint SIG event, sponsored and hosted by Microsoft Research and championed by Abhi Naha of Idem and Peter Whale of Qualcomm from Handset SIG and Tristan Barkley of TTP Group, Graham Norgett of CellMetric and Justin Paul of Alcatel-Lucent from Mobile TV SIG.

Sign up to be part of the first ever Cambridge Wireless joint Special Interest Group event, as we engage with the exciting hypothesis that a new lifestyle revolution in wireless personal video devices is fast opening up, with the mobile phone supremely placed to be the device of choice for consumption of all forms of video on the go. Hot on the heels of IBC - the broadcast industry’s annual conference, come and engage with market-leading companies and industry specialists in Cambridge Wireless’s own unique and highly thought-provoking event.

Come and engage with our team of experts as we ask whether we are at a tipping point in the mobile industry, where the pieces are coming into play for a revolution in the production and consumption of video content on mobile devices. Will innovations in wearable electronics lead to 3D video content on portable devices before we see practical application in the home theatre? Will mini projectors allow the social sharing of personal video content? Does the availability of standards formobile broadcast, IPTV, video-casting and video over 3G provide the necessary lift-off for the adoption of video consumption on the go? How big are the opportunities for both professional studio and user-generated content? Which partnerships are critical for success, and who creates the most value?

Key areas for discussion include:

Mobile devices: designing complex products to be simple!
Mobile devices fulfil many functions, camera, music player, radio, email, internet access and telephone (!) to name but a few. How does adding portable video playback capability, 3D and projection capabilities affect form-factors? How does the latest thinking in user-centred design create dream products? What can we learn from the iPhone and its impact on take-off of content consumption?

Mobile multimedia: diversity and scale
With a diverse range of multimedia and transmission standards which each offer their own benefits, yet appear to fragment the market, how should the mobile device industry respond? Should designers generate a “world” platform capable of managing all standards, or design optimised region-specific products? Technology issues and market realities are both debated.

Partnerships and Business Models
How do major multinational handset manufacturers partner with significantly smaller, but more agile, technology suppliers to address new business opportunities quickly and efficiently? How do broadcasters and content producers engage with the mobile industry to ensure the optimal experience and take up of mobile multimedia services?

This event proposes to bring together the very best speakers in both fields to answer some of these questions, but also to address issues facing these industries today, tomorrow and beyond.   Be part of this unique forum for the first time in SIG history!  Don’t miss out on your chance to take part in this groundbreaking event.  REGISTER now to secure your place.
