Handsets

This Handset SIG is championed by:

The mission of the SIG is to have over 70% of a best selling handset’s components designed or supplied by Cambridge Wireless members. By ‘components’ we mean hardware, software and services and we aim to achieve this mission by:

  • Keeping members aware of the latest technology and application trends, news and who's who in the handset industry.
  • Introducing members to key decision makers in the handset industry
  • Promoting the members' capabilities at local and international levels to targeted keyhandset players.
  • Growing membership to include keyplayers in the mobile handset industry.

We aim to achieve this in a collaborative environment of trust, openness and spirit of good will.

Joint Handset and Location SIGs, “Is Location on the Map? Monetizing Location Based Services”

After a number of false starts detours and moments of feeling lost, has the wireless industry now reached a viewing point from which we can unfold our roadmaps and rechart a route forward to monetise mobile location awareness?

This SIG is championed by David Bartlett of Pyxidium Ltd, Nigel Wall of Shadow Creek Consulting and Peter Hazlett of Nokia Corporation from the Location Based Systems/Services SIG and Abhi Naha of Onyx Innovation and Peter Whale of Qualcomm from the Handset SIG. We are also very grateful to Bango Plc for hosting this event at their Cambridge offices.

Amidst the global economic slowdown, a bright ray of light is the continued rapid volume growth of mobile phones supporting GPS, and early enthusiasm for new location-aware applications on mobile web devices. Is location now on the map?

What is the route to monetisation? Is finding out about events, places and the latest bargains nearby the way to go? Is there a case for charging users for a more precise location fix, or does this stifle the market? Is there a viable value chain inplace, or do we need to build one from scratch? Who is best positioned to derive most value from managing location? Will ad-funded business models work, or do we need to build a new model? What are the challenges and opportunities in using aggregate location data to inform market research, facilities planning and traffic management?

Come along to this timely half-day Cambridge Wireless event as we host a lively and controversial debate around the topicof monetising location awareness, the shape of the value chain required, and the likely scale of the business opportunities.

After introductory and sometimes controversial remarks from our invited panel, the chairperson will open the floor for a healthy and animated debate, where we encourage strong delegate participation. The afternoon will conclude with a distillation of key lessons and opportunities for you to take back and act on within your own organisations.

Events are FREE to Cambridge Wireless Members. Tickets for non-members are £150.00 plus VAT.
