Short Range Wireless

The Cambridge Wireless Short-range Wireless Special Interest Group focuses on the underlying technologies, and the applications, of short-range wireless links.  The group's scope encompasses standards and areas such as Bluetooth, Near-Field Communications (NFC), Ultra Wide-Band (UWB), WiFi and Zigbee, typically using unlicensed spectrum including the ISM (Industrial, Science, Medical) bands.  Proprietary systems and less well-known standards that use the same frequency bands and target similar application areas are also included in the group's scope.

This SIG is championed by the following people:
Antony Rix of TTP
Peter George of Anritsu MMDE
Tim Whittaker of Cambridge Consultants

The group seeks to:

  • address issues such as spectrum availability, interoperability, testability and usability
  • share knowledge between developers and users of the technology both on the available standards and on relevant proprietary technologies
  • share expertise on development issues such as product certifications and export licence controls
  • showcase and promote the use of wireless communications in a broad range of markets including consumer electronics, enterprises, healthcare, industry and security
  • explore new business opportunities for members in these technologies and their applications.

It is expected that 2-3 meetings will be held each year.

Short Range Wireless SIG, 'Near Field Communications: Where we are now? Where are we going?’

This event will take a look at the exciting prospect that near-field communications could bring to the world of mobile technology, unlocking an exhilarating realm of possibilities.

This half-day SIG is championed by Antony Rix of TTP, Peter George of Anritsu MMDE and Tim Whittaker of Cambridge Consultants. We also very grateful to Agilent Technologies for sponsoring this event.

NFC and RFID technology allow devices such as mobile phones and readers to talk to each other and to low-cost, battery-free, tags, within a range of a few centimetres. The technology is widely used, in retail, manufacturing, libraries, and is starting to become pervasive in non-contact payment/ticketing - for example Transport for London's Oyster system.

Attend this event to find out how and when NFC will come to mobile, and to understand some exciting new applications of NFC and RFID in areas as diverse as healthcare, security and entertainment.

Speakers at this event are -
Michael Lawton of Agilent Technologies
Neil Garner of Proxama
Peter Preuss of Nokia
John Hillan of Qualcomm
Patrick Waters of Vodafone
Ben Whittaker of Masabi
