No Free Lunch: The Consumer as Product in a Data-Driven Economy

Brought to you by The User Experience Group

The potential of connected systems, ‘smart’ devices, even smart cities - and their accompanying services - suggests a radically different (and better) future where we can utilise our assets more effectively and lead more productive (and enjoyable) lives.

About the event

The debate and excitement around the Internet of Things is prevalent across many industries.

At present, users are able to access a rapidly increasing plethora of services and content at no financial cost; services that are ever more embedded into their everyday digital and physical landscapes. These ‘free’ applications like search engines, maps and social sharing come with the promise of convenience – but at what costs? This timely and pertinent half-day SIG event taking place in Cambridge will scrutinise the sometimes hidden cost of an increasingly more invasive acquisition of personal data.

Register now to secure your place and avoid disappointment.

The Internet of Things and the impending potential of connected systems suggests a fundamentally different future with better utilisation of assets leading to more productive (and enjoyable) lives.

However this potential raises crucial challenges, predominantly the true value of this opportunity and how such connections will affect our life.

This User Experience SIG will explore the many challenges and benefits of data sharing, examine the concept of privacy in a digital and physical world, and debate and discuss what steps are needed to turn this opportunity into a beneficial reality for all.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Dana Pavel, Co-Founder, TecVis LP, who will examine "From My Data to Big Data"
  • Tim Phipps, Wireless Defence and Security, Cambridge Consultants who will explore "Personal Data and its Use in the Civil Society"
  • With a presentation from Liz Fitzsimons, Legal Director, Eversheds who will discuss the legal issues surrounding "Data and The Internet of Things"
  • Soren Preibusch, Microsoft Research

This event will also have a Panel Session with representatives from our new SIG the 'Future Technology SIG' which represents the next generation of end-users, and includes:
