About the event

You Can Be Part of the BCSWomen Guinness World Record Attempt!

The workshop is a 'family fun day' - we'll be building apps in mixed age groups. It’s suitable for anyone over the age of 10* and everyone under 18 will need a guardian (mothers and sons, fathers and daughters, aunties and nephews).

On the day each person taking part in the record would need a laptop and an android smartphone/tablet.

*If you do think a child under 10 would benefit from the day, then we can contact the local event leader for you to check whether she will make an exception.

Details:

BCSWomen are looking to promote a career in IT, especially to women. To do this we will be attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the largest number of people learning to write Android smartphone applications at the same time.

BCSWomen are getting together with various universities, organisations, companies and local BCS branches to get as many people as possible coding an app 13 June 2015.

Although we would like to use this as a way to demonstrate to young girls and women that IT can be a fun and interesting career, the event will be open to all. Families can come along together and learn (from women teachers) how to build Android apps using MIT AppInventor, which is a free, web-based system for creating simple apps using drag-and-drop coding techniques.

Using a mixture of talk, activities, and hands-on coding we will build some simple interactive applications that attendees run and install on their own Android phones or tablets. Attendees leave the day with apps they’ve built, and the software installed on their own laptops to play around with it once they get home.
