Hans van de Ven, Professor of Modern Chinese History, University of Cambridge
Hans van de Ven is an expert on the history of 19th and 20th century China. He is Professor of Modern Chinese History and has served as Chair of the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. He also is Director in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at St Catharine’s College. He has been a Guest Professor in the History Department of Nanjing University and an International Fellow at the Hopkins-Nanjing Center, China, in 2005–06.
He has written on China’s military history as well as the history of China’s globalization. His book, China at War: Triumph and Tragedy in the Emergence of the New China 1937-1952, was published in 2017 by Profile in London and Harvard University Press in 2018. Linking Press will publish a Chinese translation next year.
Research interests:
History of the Chinese Communist Party before 1949; the history of warfare in modern China from the Taiping Rebellion to the Civil War between the Communists and the Nationalists; the history of Chinese globalization in the 1850-1950 period.
