CW Talk: Covid-19 changes everything for telecomms... or does it?

Brought to you by Cambridge Wireless

It would appear that telecoms must be changed after Covid - more demand, different ways of working, more time on Zoom, but this debate will argue not so, with the audience encouraged to challenge this view.

Registration for this event is now closed.

About the event

Covid-19 changes everything...or does it? On the one hand telecoms networks have generally coped well and no obvious changes of strategy or design are needed. Over the top tools have been available for years and seem fit for purpose. Revenues and costs for operators are broadly unchanged. On the other hand, different ways of working have been rapidly introduced, companies have shown how they can collaborate and rapidly innovate where needed and remote working appears to be much more effective than many had expected.

To kick us off, Harry Bullivant, Director of Operations at TTP spin-out LEX Diagnostics, will describe how TTP worked on the ventilator project, how effective this was and the advantages and disadvantages over the "old way". William Webb, CEO of Webb Search, will then set out an argument that, despite all of this, telecoms is unchanged, or perhaps even weakened and encourage those attending to challenge and offer alternative views.

Speakers

Harry Bullivant - Director of Operations, LEX Diagnostics

Harry Bullivant joined TTP in 2010 and has led a diverse range of technology development projects in the Sensors and Devices group. His role in the CoVent ventilator development was supply chain lead to identify and secure the components required for 10,000 ventilators, working closely with Dyson as procurement transitioned over. In May 2020 Harry joined TTP’s newest spin-out LEX Diagnostics as Director of Operations in a company which has yet to meet together in person. LEX is commercialising a technology for rapid flu diagnostics based on proprietary technology created as an internal project even before COVID reared its head.

William Webb FREng FIET FIEEE - Webb Search

William is CTO at Access Partnership. He was one of the founding directors of Neul, a company developing machine-to-machine technologies and networks, which was formed at the start of 2011 and subsequently sold to Huawei and became CEO of the Weightless SIG, a body standardizing IoT technology. Prior to this William was a Director at Ofcom where he managed a team providing technical advice and performing research. He has worked for a range of communications consultancies and spent three years providing strategic management across Motorola’s entire communications portfolio, based in Chicago. He was IET President 2014-2015.

William has published 17 books, 100 papers, and 18 patents. He is a Visiting Professor at Southampton University, a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the IEEE and the IET.
