The future of urban movement

Brought to you by The Smart & Intelligent Cities Group

This event will examine the impact of Covid and current trends on mobility and transport in the future.

Registration for this event is now closed.

About the event

Following lockdown earlier this year, cities have seen significant decreases in the amount of traffic using their road networks and associated improvements in air quality. Bus networks have seen patronage collapse and there has been a decrease in the amount of people walking and cycling although not as significant as falls in road traffic. As restrictions on movement are lifted, cities need to think about likely trends in the short and medium term and how these will affect places in the longer term. The key trends in the short term to consider are:

  • A significant reduction in the amount of travellers using buses which will see in the medium-term significant issues with congestion and air quality
  • The need to prioritise walking and cycling to ameliorate the impact of a move toward more car journeys
  • The need to re-allocate roadspace to enable people to walk and cycle, queue for shops etc.
  • Capture and maintain some of the benefits that residents have seen in the lockdown period – cleaner air, safer streets etc

In the medium to long term, cities will need to predict trends in transport and their potential impacts:

  • Will we see a permanent shift to remote working and what impact will this have on land use/office space/city centres?
  • Can we maintain places that are primarily for pedestrians and cyclists?
  • How can we get people back onto public transport buses/trains?
  • How can these changes contribute to zero carbon?

Mike Manchip - Founder & CEO, Anadue

Mike Manchip is Founder and CEO of Anadue.

Micromobility has hit 2 major scaling problems in the last 2 years.

1) Operators need to look beyond scaling, and concentrate on solving the profitability challenge. Operators with a plan for profitability are more able to raise capital efficiently.

2) Local authorities need to climb the mountain of uncertainty around micromobility. They can manage and understand micromobility through the mobility data feeds from operators, using it to understand the socioeconomic benefits of the services as well as practical day to day management of compliance.

Since founding Anadue in 2017, Mike has built a team with technical, commercial and strategic skills to address the need for analytics of mobility. He has led the design and implementation of the products to the current stage of the product where Anadue is engaged with several shared micromobility operators and local authorities. Anadue is Mike’s second start-up. In 2009 Mike co-founded a big-data analytics company in the telecommunications space, providing real-time analytics to mobile telcos on how their network and service was performing. Mike was instrumental in guiding the positioning of the company and its sale in 2014.

Ian Sandison - Cambridge Bid

Ian Sandison CEO of Cambridge BID has been involved in the economic development of Cambridge for 10 years. Following a science degree from Oxford Brookes University, he spent 12 years in Corporate Healthcare before working in consultancy, start up fundraising and recruitment. In 2017 he was named one of Cambridge’s top 25 most influential business people, cycling is a great passion and real ale his other. He mentors on the Cambridge University Judge Business School MBA and is a great advocate of the high street.

He has done this mainly as a player/coach; initially working with customers himself and only building teams once he’s gained a clear understanding of what's needed to support the company's unique customer base.

In 2015, he used the knowledge gained from years of working in web analytics to found Adavow, an ad suppression platform that enables advertisers and ad networks to stop serving digital ads to consumers who have recently purchased a similar item, which increases digital budget efficiency by 10% or more.

David is a keen believer that the best way to become successful is to help others become successful and "What comes around, goes around."

Mary-Ann is the Lead data scientist at Mandrel Systems. She started her career with research into sonar (think Hunt for Red October without Sean Connery).
