Private networks, slicing and meeting the needs of industrial users

Brought to you by The Virtual Networks Group

The commerciality question – could 5G be the open door to increased revenue? Maybe. Is it possible to create a scaled-down private network that doesn’t compromise user experience? That’s the real question. This event is the third of four in this month's Virtual Network SIG series.

Registration for this event is now closed.

About the event

The ability for service providers to provide private 5G networks or dedicated, optimized slices of public networks for private use is seen as key for enterprise monetization of 5G. 5G offers service providers the opportunity to deliver services that go way beyond simple connectivity.  Some studies suggest that private networks and 5G slices may generate a revenue uplift of 12%, but accessing this economic upside isn't without its challenges.

How do service providers offer scaled-down private networks that are economically viable?  How can you create an end-to-end network slice optimized for bandwidth, latency or scale without compromising customer experience and what does this mean for the concept of "net neutrality"?

The focus of the third event in our Virtual Networks SIG series 'Realising the 'true 5G' dream' is on 'Private networks, slicing and meeting the needs of industrial users'. We will hear from some of the industry's leaders about the challenges and opportunities of private 5G networks and network slicing and how they apply to key industry verticals.

The session will conclude with a closing panel discussion and opportunity for people to network. Find out more about other events in the Virtual Networks SIG series: Realising the 'true 5G' dream

‘Cellular 2.0 – a million private networks’: Nanda Menon, CEO of Athonet UK and Director of Corporate Development for Athonet Group

Private networks represent a completely new way of delivering cellular services to a completely new class of customer and use-cases – Cellular 2.0. Based on a decade of real MPN deployment experience, we show how to deliver and manage a fleet of private networks for real use cases without compromising on quality of service and user experience.

‘Network slicing: myth or reality? Practical industrial deployment examples’: Ignacio Mas, Senior Expert & Head of Technology Innovation in OSS, Ericsson

Network slicing has been used by the industry as the poster child of 5G innovation capabilities but there have so far been few deployments with real use cases. In this talk I plan to give a quick overview of the promises of Network Slicing and then look at real use cases for industrial deployments.

14:40

‘Private networks, enterprise slicing & meeting the needs of critical comms’: Tadhg Kenny, Senior Vice President, Marketing, PR, Strategic Partnerships, Druid Software

Could 5G be the open door to increased revenue? Is it possible to create a scaled-down private network that doesn’t compromise user experience? Through the exploration of many of our use cases and references in various industry segments we will show why we think the answer is yes to the questions framing this virtual discussion.

14:55

SIG Champions

Julie Bradford - Head of techno-economic analysis, Real Wireless

Julie has worked in the wireless industry for over 15 years. At Real Wireless, she is a thought leader in 5G business case analysis including understanding 5G use cases, quantifying (in financial terms) the operational and socio-economic benefits of 5G services and understanding network dimensioning and cost implications under 5G virtualised networks.

She has most recently been working with city councils around their wireless strategy and related Green Book outline business case development. She also led Real Wireless’ techno-economic analysis on the EC Horizon 2020 5G-MoNArch project. Inspired by the project’s smart sea port testbed constructed by HPA, Nokia and DT in the Port of Hamburg, this analysis included quantifying the operational benefits of 5G to port authorities and other port users and the cost implications of delivering these industrial grade wireless services from existing mobile infrastructure via network slicing supported via the virtualised 5G-MoNArch network architecture.

Previously, Julie was Communications Engineer at QinetiQ UK, consultant at PA Consulting UK, and Senior Systems Engineer for Airvana UK. In addition to working at Real Wireless, Julie is a CW board member and champion for the CW Virtual Networks Special Interest Group (SIG).
