Volumetric Video – a Study in Depth

Brought to you by The Content Production & Delivery Group

Join the Content Production & Delivery SIG to get up to date with the science and applications of multi-dimensional imaging.

Registration for this event is now closed.

About the event

Volumetric video content and 3D visual models can be created using techniques such as stereoscopic/multiview camera arrays, scanning with RGB-D/laser sensors, and photogrammetry with light detection and ranging (LiDAR) mapping. As the demand for more interactive and realistic imaging increases, we will see more and more volumetric video content in our lives. Companies are starting to use 3D modelling in their product designs, and embed 3D video players on their websites for marketing and commercial purposes; and the general public will share 3D videos and immersive experiences on social media using their smart phones. As AR/VR platforms develop further, industry is finding applications for ‘digital twins’, where virtual representations of real-time physical objects and processes can be employed as digital counterparts to improve communication, efficiency and quality in production.

This online event will open up the science and applications of multi-dimensional imaging. Drawing on speakers who are the leading exponents of this exciting technology area, they will present a comprehensive picture of the state-of-the-art in creation, processing, transmission and display of volumetric video content.

This event will link into a future “hands-on-line” workshop/sandpit event, at which delegates will not only learn how to create and manipulate volumetric AV content, but will be able to discuss new applications and potential partnership projects with relevant players in the sector.

Employees of CW member organisations can attend this event for free. You will need to be logged into your CW account to access your free ticket – log in (or reset your password here)

‘That's Enlightentainment! Making Multi-dimensional Magic With GenieMo’ -James Marks, Co-Founder, PlayLa.bZ

‘That's Enlightentainment! Making Multi-dimensional Magic With GenieMo’

"It might feel like it’s fresh from a sci-fi film, but this technology is available, affordable, and accessible now." Jisc, Digifest 2020

The invention and DNA of the world's first volumetric video “HoloPortal” facility has evolved into 'GenieMo Alpha’ - a free DIY spatial social-cast communication & 4D storytelling software platform. This has been coded and crafted during the UK lockdowns, following 5 years of award-winning multi-dimensional motion arts R&D insight at Ravensbourne University London, with support from Innovate UK Business-led Funding.

'How did they do that?! Volumetric video explained' - Lauren Dyer, Director of Strategic Partnerships, Dimension Studio

'How did they do that?! Volumetric video explained'

Volumetric video performances are powering some of the most immersive and effective experiences in entertainment, healthcare and beyond. From the recent Balenciaga video game Afterworld: The Age of Tomorrow to Health Education England's Covid-19 training, volumetric, digital humans are central to the future of how we consume and engage with content. This session gives a primer for volumetric video production, using some of the most innovative use cases to date, and touches on the future of the technology.

'HYPER - aligning digital and real spaces to redefine interactions' - Yates Buckley, CTO, UNIT9

'HYPER - aligning digital and real spaces to redefine interactions'

A new class of applications are emerging that integrate augmented and virtual reality with physical environments. Typically described as mixed reality, these applications are deployed in highly controlled spaces with expensive tracking technologies. HYPER is focused on bringing the new mixed reality experiences to a broader developer base for wider industrial applications. By accurately aligning digital space with the real world we can look at new design problems that have the human body subject to complex spatial constraints. With HYPER we make spatial alignment easy, enabling design experiences where proprioception and tactile feedback can be leveraged to solve real-world problems.

ARCloud - a crowd-sourced 3D mapping - Jérôme Royan , Senior Architect, b<>com, France

'ARCloud - a crowd-sourced 3D mapping'

In XR domain, volumetric video is a well-known application of 3D reconstruction. But 3D reconstruction is also used by most XR devices for inside-out 6DoF tracking based on SLAM, and the ARCloud technology plans to distribute it in the cloud with 5G connectivity to provide large-scale multi-user XR experiences. How does this technology work? What are the benefits of the ARCloud, the technological challenges, and above all what are the future impacts of such technology on our society? Welcome to a new world, an augmented world!

Speakers

Yates Buckley - CTO, UNIT9

Yates has a broad experience of technology applied to creative production. His personal interest is in how technology is enabling new tools for expression. His interests are diverse, from neuroscience, game-design for health and training to solving problems in space for immersive applications in built environments. With HyperCRC, Yates has been looking at how blending actual reality with immersive can create a more accessible and believable embodied experience.

Lauren Dyer - Director of Strategic Partnerships, Dimension Studio

Lauren Dyer joined the Dimension team as Director of Strategic Partnerships in 2019. Lauren is responsible for long-term creative and strategic partnerships with brands, agencies and industry bodies working alongside Dimension to drive forward the development and adoption of volumetric, XR and real-time technologies.  With a resume including The Mill, MediaMonks and Stink Studios, Lauren has worked on some of the world’s first interactive films and immersive social content, producing tailor made projects as Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat. She is an active mentor and judge, part of the BIMA Interactive Technologies Council, and has spoken at conferences and events from Advertising Week Europe, Digital Shoreditch and D&AD.
