About the event

Our second event in the Non-Terrestrial Networks SIG examines the new near-earth platforms and the very different applications they serve, in particular their part in transforming agriculture for a changing climate (and growing population) and revolutionising cellular coverage. From LEO - low earth orbit - clusters for high-speed data and low-power IoT device networks to HAPS - high altitude pseudo satellites - for fixed position observation.

Our speakers come from technology providers and platform operators and will give their vision of how the new near-earth sector will revolutionise agriculture and cellular coverage.

This is the second in two launch events from the Non-Terrestrial Networks SIG. The first, 'Lift Off! An Overview of Non-Terrestrial Networks', was held on the 24th June. The the video of the session along with the presentations are available here.

Gina will share some of the exciting and scalable trends in Satellite Applications for the Agrifood sector. She will provide an update on the development of the Agri Living Lab, a new initiative to bring expertise from across the food supply chain to develop, trial and showcase solutions to the global challenges within the food supply chain via robust real world environmental testing and collaborative support.

'Telecom Innovation High Altitude Platforms Deliver'

The presentation will explore the opportunity to change both the qualities and the economics of future networks by using High Altitude Platforms (aka High Altitude Pseudo-Satellites). It will look at the evolution of mobile networks to understand how a different approach using HAPS can rediscover some of the aims and achievements of earlier networks that have been lost in recent “Gs” and challenge some of the misconceptions for services delivered in this way.

Tim Fowler - Chief Sales Officer, Cambridge Consultants

Tim Fowler is Chief Sales Officer for Cambridge Consultant where he has responsibility for driving sales performance at the company. Tim has more than thirty years technical and commercial experience in technology innovation in the mobile and telecoms. Since joining Cambridge Consultants in 2004, Tim has been responsible for managing many mobile broadband projects. These have included technologies from short-range Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology to wide-area systems such as GSM, WiMAX, WCDMA/HSPA, CDMA2000 & EVDO, LTE/LTE-A and, more recently, 5G projects. Until the start of 2020, Tim was the Head of the Wireless and Digital Services Division.

Gina Mercier

Gina Mercier is the Business Development Lead for Agriculture within the Satellite Applications Catapult. She has over fourteen years’ experience working in Business Development within the public and private sector across speciality chemicals and technology industries. In her role at the Catapult Gina works with key players from industry, government, and academia to identify and promote the use of satellite technologies in agriculture and food applications. Satellites provide a wealth of data, connectivity and information that can be used to inform and assist agriculture practices and create more robust and resilient food supply chains. Gina is leading the development of the Agri Living Lab which brings together expertise from across agricultural technology and satellite applications with state-of-the art testing facilities and real-world trial environments. Created with the vision to provide access to a collaborative and robust testing, the Agri Living Lab aims to provide organisations with access to specialist knowledge and capabilities from research, technology and business support to rapid product and service design, prototyping and testing.

Luc Perard - Senior Vice President of IoT Business, Eutelsat SA

Luc Perard has 20 years of continuous experience in the Internet of Things (IoT) industry, during which he has driven global strategy, sales and business development at Siemens, Jasper, Vodafone, Accenture, PTC and now Eutelsat, one of the world's leading commercial satellite operators. Mr. Perard currently serves as Eutelsat's Senior Vice President of IoT Business. In this role, Mr. Perard defines and executes the company's IoT commercial and go-to-market strategies globally. He leads the IoT business development activities and forges key partnerships with the most prestigious IoT solution providers and network operators across the world. Mr. Perard has studied at Harvard Business School in Boston, MA, McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and holds a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering and Management from Grenoble Institute of Technology in France.

SIG Champions

Kieran Arnold - Systems Engineer, Future Systems, Satellite Applications Catapult

Kieran has held various senior technical and executive roles over the past 30 years which included R&D Chief Technical Officer for Orange / France Telecom R&D and Head of Payload Systems Engineering, Airbus Space & Defence. He is currently Director of Ubiquitous Connectivity in the Satellite Applications Catapult and General Manager of the Westcott Site where they host their 5G testbed. Kieran leads on two major 5G projects, firstly a project funded by SEMLEP for Milton Keynes Smart City 5G deployment and a DCMS funded project for Dorset Council providing rural connectivity using satellite and terrestrial connectivity.

Steve Clarke - CTO, Wyld Networks Ltd

Previously a senior BBC engineer and lecturer at Salford University, Steve has many years of experience in software and electronics, from RF telemetry and low-power radio bridges to the multi award-winning Tag McLaren AV processors, EPOS & smart energy meters. Steve founded two IoT companies and led the development team of ACIS (now Vix Technology), growing them to become the UK’s largest bus telematics company.

Stewart Marsh - Head of Aerospace, Cambridge Consultants

As head of aerospace at Cambridge Consultants, Stewart leads the company's collaboration within the sector. Central to Stewart's role is helping companies achieve complex technology breakthroughs that unlock transformative business value. This has included a world-first Push-to-Talk satellite service and an innovative beyond visual line-of-sight UAV solution using low power satellite technology. With over 20 years' technology experience, Stewart has held a range of senior technology roles and has a wealth of expertise across aerospace, mobile communications and GNSS.

Paul Morris - VP RF and Communications Business Unit, EnSilica plc

Paul has 30 years’ experience working on various wireless and semi-conductor systems most recently promoting semiconductors for Ka-band beamformers for satellite connectivity and growing EnSilica’s business. He gained his semiconductor experience from CSR’s early days through to its trade sale to Qualcomm where he was Senior Director, Technology covering a range of mobile, security, wireless audio and automotive products. He enjoys growing international technology businesses and has lived and worked in France and China. Paul is active in various Cambridge local networks including CW and Cambridge Network and has acted in advisory roles for start-ups.

Jaime Reed - Vice President, Space Data Platforms and Applications, CGI

Jaime loves working with clients to invent the Space services of the future. He leads Space Data Platforms and Applications team in the UK for CGI, the largest IT and business consulting company in the space sector. Using SatCom and Remote Sensing technologies his team work on topics like smart cities, connected transport, AI, 5G, geospatial applications and HAPS. Jaime has spent 20 years in the space industry as a systems engineer and project manager working on some of the most complex ground, satellite and software systems for clients like the European Space Agency and NASA. Jaime has a Doctorate in Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics and is a Chartered Engineer.

Cyril Valadon - Technical Director, MediaTek (MTK Wireless Limited)

Cyril is Technical Director with MediaTek in Cambourne where he is leading the Core Technology Division in the wireless business unit. He completed his PhD at the University of Surrey where he was looking at the use of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) techniques for multimedia satellite communication systems (in the heady days of Globalstar, Iridium, ICO, …). He has since spent 20 years in the semiconductor industry standardizing, architecting and developing wireless chipsets for numerous cellular communication standards. His team is currently working on a variety of development projects for 5G/NR solutions and he is personally very keen in exploring opportunities to apply these solutions for different applications.
