About the event

As launch costs tumble a host of telco operators are re-examining the opportunities from Space and converged communications propositions are emerging. At the same time, industrial grade terrestrial technologies from silicon to software are being deployed in satellite platforms speeding time to market. This is enabling new global business cases which promise to improve everyone’s connectivity.

This session will explore the challenges of delivering telecoms services from space and the engineering obstacles which organsations need to overcome. These include: 

  • High radiation,
  • Wide temperature variation and
  • Power limitations

'AAC Clyde Space – Bringing Space Down To Earth' - Sue Kee, AAC Clyde Space

Sue will give a brief introduction to AAC Clyde Space before discussing the opportunities – and challenges – presented by CubeSats in Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

'Antennas in Space' - Mats Andersson

In his talk Mats will focus on the often extreme challenges of designing antennas to be used in a space environment. He will talk about when he was the project manager at Saab Ericsson Space, Gothenburg, Sweden for the development of antenna elements for 12 MEO satellites with large phased arrays. There were 127 TX and 127 RX elements on each of the 12 satellites. In addition to the challenges with electrical and mechanical design he also had to solve very large challenges with PIM (Passive InterModulation) and charge build up from free protons in the MEO orbit. Despite these challenges he managed to achieve extremely low cost production for space qualified antennas by using a supplier who also supplied IKEA with metallic lamp shades

'Silicon in Space' - Paul Morris, Ensilica

The breakneck pace of satellite development and deployment is questioning the traditional deep space approaches to on board electronics. Key components comprise the semiconductor but how can we use some of the latest semiconductor processes in a space environment? How is the silicon affected by the conditions in space? What types of errors can occur and how can we mitigate against those? This is an introduction to the challenges of operating semiconductor electronics in space.

This presentation will outline the unique challenges of developing software for the space environment and how these challenges are overcome.

Mats Andersson

Mats Andersson is an industry thought-leader with over 30 years international satellite and telecom experience. Between 1986 – 2006 he held various engineering and management positions at Ericsson (in Canada, England and Sweden) and brings extensive expertise from the industry. Additionally, he holds three university degrees (Lic. Eng., M. Sc. and B.A.). In 2006, Mats joined tech start-up, Bluetest AB in Gothenburg as CEO. Under his leadership, Bluetest grew to become the world leading MIMO Over-The-Air (OTA) test company. Mr. Andersson joined Huawei Technologies Sweden AB in 2011 as Site and System Manager for Radio Base Systems, in Gothenburg. During his tenure, Huawei Gothenburg became a renowned global competence center for Higher Order MIMO and Massive MIMO base stations. In 2014, Mats established MUMIMO AB – a company with a focus on innovation and business development for small and large wireless companies and brings thought-leading expertise within 5G, satellite communications and new wireless technologies. Mats is currently Chairman of the Board of Forsway Scandinavia AB and Satcube AB, and a Board Member of Wyld Networks AB. He is an investor in Bluetest AB, SweGaN AB and Brinja AB.

Mark Hann - Software Architect, CGI

Mark has been a technical architect in spacecraft on board software for over 20 years, working on earth observation and science missions for the European Space Agency and UK Space Agency. His recent projects include leading the instrument management software for European Exomars rover.

Sue Kee - Head of Business Development for Missions & Services, AAC Clyde Space

Sue is Head of Business Development for Missions and Services at AAC Clyde Space. She enjoyed 15 years in IBM UK, where she gained significant commercial, contract negotiation and leadership skills. She entered the space sector by gaining a postgraduate certificate in Space Science and serving as Business Development Manager at the Scottish Centre of Excellence in Satellite Applications (SoXSA) before joining AAC Clyde Space in 2020.

Paul Morris - VP RF and Communications Business Unit, EnSilica plc

Paul has 30 years’ experience working on various wireless and semi-conductor systems most recently promoting semiconductors for Ka-band beamformers for satellite connectivity and growing EnSilica’s business. He gained his semiconductor experience from CSR’s early days through to its trade sale to Qualcomm where he was Senior Director, Technology covering a range of mobile, security, wireless audio and automotive products. He enjoys growing international technology businesses and has lived and worked in France and China. Paul is active in various Cambridge local networks including CW and Cambridge Network and has acted in advisory roles for start-ups.

Kieran Arnold - Systems Engineer, Future Systems, Satellite Applications Catapult

Kieran has held various senior technical and executive roles over the past 30 years which included R&D Chief Technical Officer for Orange / France Telecom R&D and Head of Payload Systems Engineering, Airbus Space & Defence. He is currently Director of Ubiquitous Connectivity in the Satellite Applications Catapult and General Manager of the Westcott Site where they host their 5G testbed. Kieran leads on two major 5G projects, firstly a project funded by SEMLEP for Milton Keynes Smart City 5G deployment and a DCMS funded project for Dorset Council providing rural connectivity using satellite and terrestrial connectivity.

Steve Clarke - CTO, Wyld Networks Ltd

Previously a senior BBC engineer and lecturer at Salford University, Steve has many years of experience in software and electronics, from RF telemetry and low-power radio bridges to the multi award-winning Tag McLaren AV processors, EPOS & smart energy meters. Steve founded two IoT companies and led the development team of ACIS (now Vix Technology), growing them to become the UK’s largest bus telematics company.

Stewart Marsh - Head of Aerospace, Cambridge Consultants

As head of aerospace at Cambridge Consultants, Stewart leads the company's collaboration within the sector. Central to Stewart's role is helping companies achieve complex technology breakthroughs that unlock transformative business value. This has included a world-first Push-to-Talk satellite service and an innovative beyond visual line-of-sight UAV solution using low power satellite technology. With over 20 years' technology experience, Stewart has held a range of senior technology roles and has a wealth of expertise across aerospace, mobile communications and GNSS.

Jaime Reed - Vice President, Space Data Platforms and Applications, CGI

Jaime loves working with clients to invent the Space services of the future. He leads Space Data Platforms and Applications team in the UK for CGI, the largest IT and business consulting company in the space sector. Using SatCom and Remote Sensing technologies his team work on topics like smart cities, connected transport, AI, 5G, geospatial applications and HAPS. Jaime has spent 20 years in the space industry as a systems engineer and project manager working on some of the most complex ground, satellite and software systems for clients like the European Space Agency and NASA. Jaime has a Doctorate in Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics and is a Chartered Engineer.

Cyril Valadon - Technical Director, MediaTek (MTK Wireless Limited)

Cyril is Technical Director with MediaTek in Cambourne where he is leading the Core Technology Division in the wireless business unit. He completed his PhD at the University of Surrey where he was looking at the use of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) techniques for multimedia satellite communication systems (in the heady days of Globalstar, Iridium, ICO, …). He has since spent 20 years in the semiconductor industry standardizing, architecting and developing wireless chipsets for numerous cellular communication standards. His team is currently working on a variety of development projects for 5G/NR solutions and he is personally very keen in exploring opportunities to apply these solutions for different applications.
