The Brutal Reality of the Future of Connected Devices

Brought to you by The Connected Devices Group

The projected figure of 20 billion or more connected devices in 2020 has morphed into an accepted fact within the industry, but look under the surface and there’s a worrying lack of support.

Registration for this event is now closed.

About the event

Whilst progress is being made, infrastructure and management services show little sign of supporting this growth, which would require over 5 million new M2M devices to be connected every day. The hype is still going strong, but where are the foundations?

Join us for this half day event as we explore the industry challenges of reaching the tens of billions mark. With GPRS disappearing, there is a glaring infrastructure hole. Will that be replaced by LPWAN or cellular? How will these devices be managed, updated and replaced, and what are the security threats as M2M moves from a vertical market to a far more horizontal one? Join us to discuss these issues as we look beyond the PR into the practicalities of a future of connected devices.

Enterprise readiness and maturity in Enterprise IoT: Emil Berthelsen, Principle Analyst, Machina Research

Innovative IoT technologies continue to accelerate and enable the growth of connected things, yet, what is it that has held back the absolute explosion of IoT? The readiness and maturity of enterprises in this new and complex field remains at a fairly nascent stage. Fear of change, lack of standardisation, and ‘enterprise culture’ are some of the reasons. As these barriers are overcome, the growth will become a reality –driven not only by internally focused goals but also the benefits and opportunities from Subnets of Things and Operational Data Spaces. Be prepared.

Dritan Kaleshi - Director of Technology - 5G, Digital Catapult, Visiting Research Fellow, University of Bristol (Communication Systems & Networks Research Group)

With 30 years’ experience as a technologist and researcher in communication networks, distributed system design and interoperability, Dritan is Director of 5G Technology at Digital Catapult and Co-Director of SONIC Labs. Dritan has established and leads the Future Networks 5G and Digital Infrastructure programs in Digital Catapult, delivering technology development and innovation in advanced ICT systems and their adoption in enterprise networks in the UK. He was a founder of the SONIC Labs and of UK Telecommunication Network (UKTIN).  An acknowledged thought leader in his field, Dritan has published over 75 papers, holds three patents and has edited two international standards on interoperability, and is often invited to speak on advanced digital infrastructure and communication systems. He has represented the UK in international standardisation bodies and served on/chaired international conferences and technical committees, and provided technical advice to industry and the UK government.  His focus is on national coordination and how to best support advanced digital infrastructure and connectivity technology uptake, growing UK capabilities in telecommunications R&D, as well as developing in Digital Catapult  technical advances on new 5G/6G network architectures, network and service orchestration, edge computing and IoT support.  Prior to Digital Catapult he was at University of Bristol, where he led a 15-strong research team, strategically combining network and distributed systems research with industrial collaboration, making a wide range of contributions and practical implementations in networking, interoperability, smart energy, cities and digital health.

Patrick Mitchell - Commercial Director, Mayflower

David Sharp - Head of Engineering - Autonomous Mobility, Ocado Technology

David Sharp leads Ocado's "Technology 10x" multidisciplinary innovation team that works on devising and developing disruptive technologies that can make transformational improvements to Ocado. The "10x" is about seeking to make a "ten times" difference to something rather than a 10% incremental improvement. The team works on creating new automation, interaction, robotic and machine learning systems that push the state of the art in e-commerce and logistics. The team is home to specialists in artificial intelligence, machine learning, software, electronics, mechanics and robotics. David joined Ocado in 2013 to help innovate the development of Ocado's robotic warehouses and then went on to create and grow the 10x innovation team. Prior to joining Ocado, David worked as a technology consultant in Cambridge and London, creating new technologies and advising businesses, investors and lawyers on technology-related strategies, projects and ventures.

David was previously a Lecturer in Computing at Imperial College, London, having graduated from Imperial with a PhD in Computing and MBA in New Ventures. He is a scholar of King's College Cambridge, where he studied Engineering (Electrical Sciences Tripos).

SIG Champions

Paul Green - Creative Director, Iotics

Paul originated Arkessa in 2006 - the business that provides remote internet services to multitudes of machines. He is currently creating the services Arkessa will offer in five year's time. His professional life combined engineering and science has taken him through a variety of roles, including design and production engineering, business planning, marketing and corporate sales, mainly in the telecommunications sector. Interestingly, the first product he introduced to manufacture is now is in the Science Museum in London. A passionate and committed Christian, Paul is as excited about materials science and quantum physics as he is interested in railways, walking, skiing and the natural world.

Nick Hunn - CTO, WiFore Consulting

For the past thirty years Nick has been closely involved with short range wireless and communications, designing technology that helps to bring mobility to products, particularly in the areas of telematics, M2M, IoT, wearables, smart energy and mobile health. He is closely involved with the Bluetooth SIG, the Continua Alliance and other medical and wireless standards bodies. He is the author of 'The Essentials of Short Range Wireless' - a book attempting to explain the application of wireless technology to product developers.

Tim Whittaker - Head of Professional Audio Visual, Wireless & Digital Services, Cambridge Consultants
