The End of Network Architecture

Brought to you by The Virtual Networks Group

The advances in software technologies and their penetration into network operations and deployments have sparked the fantasies of many research and corporate innovators; with the ultimate vision of turning the “series of tubes” (Sen. Ted Stevens) into a gigantic distributed computer.

Registration for this event is now closed.

About the event

Software-defined networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) lead the way in emerging network offerings, but the innovations towards the 5th generation of mobile networks (5G) have already started to push the boat out even further.

This half day SIG event will build on previous events by connecting these emerging SDN/NFV technologies with some of the more “out there” propositions that will ultimate fulfil the ever-stricter requirements of 5G of, e.g., 1ms latency and seconds of service creation time, in truly multi-tenant and highly-densed networks.  The event will include speakers from academia, innovative SMEs and corporate R&D efforts, sharing their latest developments towards a truly software-base.

Introduction to the CW Virtual Networks SIG from Martin Crack of Amdocs

14:10

In a virtual world, what defines an operator?; Simon Tonks, Principal Consultant, PA Consulting

In the hard-wired world the answer has always been clear – they own the RAN or exchanges, they have
Core nodes, and licences to operate telecom services. But as the network becomes virtual the definition becomes blurred. More parties become involved, the business model becomes more complex, and operational responsibilities become fragmented. And where is the core network anyway? If it is on a
cloud system it could move from country to country in an instant. Whose jurisdiction is it under?
This presentation will explore some of the questions that should be asked by those involved in operating or governing virtual telecom networks.

14:35

SDN/NFV: Is it game over for Network Hardware?; Dimitra Simeonidou, Professor of High Performance Networks, University of Bristol

This talk will discuss new requirements for hardware innovation arising from current trends of "softwareising" the network. Benefits of "white box" and programmable hardware deployment will be addressed and lessons learned through the design and deployment in the "Bristol Is Open" Programmable City testbed.

15:00

New approaches to multi-tenant networking through software-based networks; Dirk Trossen, Principal Engineer, InterDigital UK

Control in today’s networks is inherently coupled to the aspect of ownership of assets, with concepts like virtual network operators only slowly relaxing this relation. Operation of 5G networks is expected to span multi-tenant and multi-owner networks in a flexible and dynamic manner, driven by new application areas like the Internet of Things, Smart Cities, Smart Transport and many others. This talk will explore such novel concepts as well as work in this space, piggybacking on the increasing software-based
operation of telecom infrastructure through software-defined networking and network virtualization solutions.

Evolution of OpenCache: an OpenSource Virtual Content Distribution Network (vCDN) Platform; Daniel King, University of Lancaster

Operators recognise that Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) are essential for meeting user Internet
application and content demands, while tightly integrating to provide request routing, content caching,
load balancing. A major step towards achieving these goals is to embrace recent Software Defined
Network and Network Function Virtualisation objectives and design principles. OpenCache, an
experimental caching platform, includes architectural design decisions, functional components and
highlights of virtualising the key processes of caching content and control functions. We provide
examples of how OpenCache may be deployed to provide a vCDN infrastructure, and the benefits it can provide. We also highlight how OpenCache may evolve to integrate with recent Standards Development Organisation (SDO) initiatives.

Speakers

Daniel King - Senior Researcher, Lancaster University

Dimitra Simeonidou - Professor of High Performance Networks, University of Bristol (Communication Systems & Networks Research Group)

Dimitra Simeonidou is a Full Professor at the University of Bristol, the Co-Director of the Bristol Digital Futures Institute and the Director of Smart Internet Lab. Her research is focusing on the fields of high-performance networks, programmable networks, wireless-optical convergence, 5G/6G and smart city infrastructures. She is increasingly working with Social Sciences on topics of digital transformation for society and businesses. Dimitra has been the Technical Architect and the CTO of the smart city project Bristol Is Open. She is currently leading the Bristol City/Region 5G and Open RAN pilots.

She is the author and co-author of over 600 publications, numerous patents and several major contributions to standards.

She has been co-founder of two spin-out companies, the latest being the University of Bristol VC funded spin-out Zeetta Networks delivering SDN solutions for enterprise and emergency networks.

Dimitra is a Fellow of the Royal Academy  of Engineering (FREng), a Fellow of the IEEE (FIEEE) and a Royal Society Wolfson Scholar.

Simon Tonks - Principal Consultant, PA Consulting Group

SIG Champions

Julie Bradford - Head of techno-economic analysis, Real Wireless

Julie has worked in the wireless industry for over 15 years. At Real Wireless, she is a thought leader in 5G business case analysis including understanding 5G use cases, quantifying (in financial terms) the operational and socio-economic benefits of 5G services and understanding network dimensioning and cost implications under 5G virtualised networks.

She has most recently been working with city councils around their wireless strategy and related Green Book outline business case development. She also led Real Wireless’ techno-economic analysis on the EC Horizon 2020 5G-MoNArch project. Inspired by the project’s smart sea port testbed constructed by HPA, Nokia and DT in the Port of Hamburg, this analysis included quantifying the operational benefits of 5G to port authorities and other port users and the cost implications of delivering these industrial grade wireless services from existing mobile infrastructure via network slicing supported via the virtualised 5G-MoNArch network architecture.

Previously, Julie was Communications Engineer at QinetiQ UK, consultant at PA Consulting UK, and Senior Systems Engineer for Airvana UK. In addition to working at Real Wireless, Julie is a CW board member and champion for the CW Virtual Networks Special Interest Group (SIG).

Andrew Palmer - Consulting Director, CGI

Andrew has more than 33 years of experience in IT, Telecoms and TV and Media, having worked in various roles for IBM, AT&T, Ericsson, Motorola and Arris. Andrew's present role is to leverage existing CGI capabilities that match the needs of our clients in the Space, Defence and Intelligence sectors, as well as building new capabilities that will support the emerging and changing needs of our client base. Andrew has proven experience in developing and delivering complex SI and Services solutions that meet both business and technology needs.

Andrew has co-authored "UK Telecoms For Dummies", an essential guide to the complicated UK Telecoms sector as well as articles for publications such as the Cambridge Wireless Journal including "How do we build the new world of 5g?". He frequently speaks at conferences and provides media commentary on industry topics like 5G, IoT and Smart Cities, as well as being a member of the techUK Spectrum Policy Forum and the Cambridge Wireless Virtual Networks Special Interest Group.

Paul Rhodes - Director of OpenRAN, AtlasEdge Data Centres

Paul has a B Eng in Communications Engineering from University of Hull and worked in the wireless industry internationally for over 30 years.

At AtlasEdge he is responsible for RAN and Open vRAN Public and Private network architecture, strategy. He has deployed 4G and 5G small cell networks in both classical architecture and as dark-fibre disaggregated RAN networks and is currently refining the technical and cost implications of centralised classic and virtualised networks.

During his career Paul has worked in Telco Vendors and Infrastructure Providers, significantly for Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, CityFibre and World Wide Technology in Technical and Commercial roles in both Europe and North America. He is also an Expert Working Group Member in Wireless Networking at UKTIN.
