Big Data: The Value of the Needle in a Haystack of Needles

Brought to you by Cambridge Wireless

“Big data is like teenage sex: everyone talks about it, nobody really knows how to do it, everyone thinks everyone else is doing it, so everyone claims they are doing it...” (Dan Ariely)

About the event

In a world of buzzwords, Big Data is probably the most overused. But what does it mean, why does it matter and how can you and your company make money from it? This SIG moves beyond data collection and visualisation and focuses squarely on data prediction. Register now to attend the inaugural Big Data SIG event taking place at the offices of Taylor Wessing in London, where speakers will delve into the deeper meaning of Big Data and give you answers. Confirmed speakers include Vinod Bange of Taylor Wessing, Henry Kay of Airwave, Paul Davison of MLL Telecom, Martin Goodson of Skimlinks and Phil Claridge of Arieso.

With the explosion in available source data and the increasing availability of solutions to gain historical insight in that data, organisations are starting to reap the benefits of Big Data. Find out what we actually mean by Big Data: where does it come from? How do we store and process Big Data to gain insight? Then discover how both private and public sector organisations are putting Big Data to use, and quantifying the benefits. We will explore the broader challenges of Big Data, spanning technological (i.e. such as making sense of data), social (e.g. acceptability, privacy concerns), and legal (e.g. data ownership, accountability, etc.)

At the first Big Data SIG event, you will hear from a diverse set of speakers across public and private sectors, sharing and quantifying how Big Data is delivering business and operational benefit in their organisations, and explore the challenges they face.

Gain insight into how companies are monetising that data, and how public sector organisations are delivering better value. Predictive analytics can provide both insight into consumer behaviour, and also to public service demand drivers, but what about privacy and legal issues?

Speakers include:

This SIG is championed by Paul Davison from MLL Telecom, Henry Kay of Airwave, Dana Pavel of TecVis and Rob Symes of The Outside View. We are grateful to Taylor Wessing for hosting, Airwave for sponsoring the lunch and IET for supporting the event.

Introduction to the CW Big Data SIG from Dana Pavel, Co-Founder, TecVis LP

13:10

Welcome from Patrick Clark, Partner, Taylor Wessing

13:15

Welcome from Prof David Crawford, Fellow and Council Member, The IET

13:20

Big data: what's the big fuss?; Vinod Bange, Partner, Taylor Wessing

Vin Bange will outline the different legal issues around Big Data, examine the more central themes arising under data privacy laws and look at the views of the data regulators. Will the law shape Big Data or will Big Data shape the law?

13:45

Big data: driving operational excellence in public safety; Henry Kay, Head of Smarter Network Solutions, Airwave

An overview of various Big Data use cases in the blue-light public safety arena, including:
 Real-time analytics of resource location data: how to spot “Yo-Yo Policing”
 How real-time and historic analytics of public safety mobile usage data supports the policing of major events
 How real-time operational dashboards help to identify potential problems before they occur
Also, we will share Airwave’s overall Big Data systems architecture, and cover our approach to integrating some of the key components.

14:10

Collecting data in the smart city: how we get it, where we put it, and what can we do with it?; Paul Davison, Systems Architect, MLL Telecom

This talk covers two real-world examples of Big Data in action. One is a network monitoring device (the "Smart City Agent") that also happens to collect large amounts of other measurements of the environment it operates in. The other is a device being developed for the Oxford Flood Network for early warning and trends analysis. We look at the data being collected, how it is transmitted and stored, and how it can be used and reported on. We'll also talk about both corporate and community applications of Big Data and how they might work together, while still making money for the operator.

The far side of the internet: modern online advertising; Martin Goodson, VP Data Science, Skimlinks

On the far side of the observable internet lie the exchanges and advertisers who aim to profit by attracting your attention. During a typical internet session, trading of data and screen space is intense. Bigger data or better algorithms can provide critical competitive advantage. This talk will be a guided tour through the fast-changing and unstable landscape of modern online advertising.

15:40

Big data, customer experience and location – challenges and opportunities; Phil Claridge, Chief Innovation Architect, Arieso

This talk will explore some of the opportunities, applications, techniques, and issues found processing massive volumes of carrier data.
 Initially the talk will review opportunities and insights in processing, call, radio network and location information from carrier networks; with a particular focus on extracting meaningful insights from the vast amount of data about the location and movement of people available to mobile networks
 Then the talk will explore a number of the key challenges, techniques and observations that will be relevant to anyone with an interest in big data projects within or beyond the wireless marketplace.

Speakers

Vinod Bange - Partner, Taylor Wessing

Phil Claridge - Founder, Mandrel Systems

Phil Claridge is a ‘virtual CTO’ for hire within Mandrel Systems covering end-to-end systems. Currently having fun and helping others with large-scale AI systems integration, country-wide large scale big-data processing, hands-on IoT technology (from sensor hardware design, through LoRa integration to back end systems), and advanced city information modelling. Supporting companies with M&A ‘exit readiness’, due-diligence and on advisory boards. Past roles include: CTO, Chief Architect, Labs Director, and Technical Evangelist for Geneva/Convergys (telco), Arieso/Viavi (geolocation), and Madge (networking). Phil’s early career was in electronics, and still finds it irresistible to swap from Powerpoint to a soldering iron and a compiler to produce proof-of-concepts when required.
