5G Technologist – (R&D)

Summary

The role combines technical excellence, strategic evaluation and cutting edge research capabilities focused on practical deployment, running, and involvement with advanced service development activities for 5G infrastructure with a particular focus on network virtualisation, mobile edge computing, orchestration and automation

5G Technologist – (R&D)

Digital Catapult is a leading advanced digital technologies innovation centre in the UK. Its 5G  Programme works directly in strategic partnership with leading universities, mobile industry key players, small companies and government. The 5G Programme at Digital Catapult operates advanced facilities that underpin our 5G innovation and R&D activities, delivers thought leadership in the UK 5G ecosystem, works closely with key players in mobile industry and other vertical industries looking for pathways to adopt 5G, and delivers support and technical advice to organisations and government. Digital Catapult operates its own 5G Brighton facility - one of the best 5G testbeds in the country, geographically distributed between Brighton and London – as well as running one of the best purpose-designed 5G Testbed Accelerator Programmes in the UK. The 5G Programme is underpinned by a strong technical team, with expertise in core networks, SDN, NFV and MEC, and with demonstrated capability to design, deploy and operate end-to-end commercial and open source-enabled 5G testbeds. At the same time

At Digital Catapult we are expanding our 5G technical team to further support our activities above, and are looking for talented and passionate engineers with experience and desire to both develop features of next generation mobile network systems and technically lead on purposeful and meaningful adoption of these technologies in ways that contribute to the UK economic growth. Digital Catapult 5G technical team offers an exciting and exceptional opportunity to contribute, and develop skills, at the interface between communication infrastructure and its users, at a time when the communication infrastructure is becoming very flexible. You will be joining a very dynamic and active 5G technical team that is currently involved in several collaborative projects, including 5GPPP Horizon 2020 5G-VICTORI, and mobile industry key players working on delivering meaningful proof-of-concepts for 5G networks in new application areas, in particular in creative, manufacturing and logistics industries, that take advantage of advanced features of 5G networks, including slicing.

The role combines technical excellence, strategic evaluation and cutting edge research capabilities focused on practical deployment, running, and involvement with advanced service development activities for 5G infrastructure with a particular focus on network virtualisation, mobile edge computing, orchestration and automation

Technologists, engineers and researchers with strong backgrounds in telecommunications, mobile communication networks, computer networks, virtualisation and cloud technologies, with either hands-on exceptional software developments skills and systems engineering experience, or track record in leading teams in these areas, are welcome to apply.

The role combines solid technical excellence, good understanding of the current state and direction of mobile technologies evolution, ability to undertake hands-on research and software development in key technology blocks of the 5G architecture.

What will you do:

Based in London, this role is focused on research and development of key components of 5G architecture, adaptations of them for proof-of-concept and demonstrations, and delivering specific technical activities in various 5G projects in Digital Catapult.

What You’ll Do:

●      Work with the 5G tech team and contribute towards the design deployment of novel architectures, in particular for network and MEC service orchestration, and testing using our 5G testbed

●      Work in as a solutions architect with Digital Catapult partners from vertical industries (e.g. manufacturing, logistics, immersive) technology companies, gather requirements for the 5G testbed and provide technical guidance and support to teams developing specific use case applications and services

●      Contributed to R&D projects around the technical core competencies, in particular virtualisation, cloud technologies and service orchestration in a telecommunication domain, contributing original research results, participating in project meetings and conference calls, and producing relevant reports and deliverables for the project.

●      Create project proposals that cover technical, commercial and strategic goals, to be communicated to a range of audiences from highly technical specialists to senior management.  Where appropriate and feasible, develop Proof of Concept implementations to back up the viability of project proposals, and to demonstrate potential value through indicative results

What We’re Looking For:

●      Experience of network systems and protocols for fixed and mobile communication systems and a good understanding of core network protocols, including 3GPP 5G.

●      Good communication skills of the above, and interested in explaining technology work to/for service developers and adopters; ability to communicate clearly technically complex concepts equally to peers and non-technical senior management.

●      Track record ability to specify, configure and setup core components of the fixed and mobile network

●      Knowledge and experience of Communication Networks, Systems and Network Configuration, Firewall Configuration and Switch Configuration – we are happy to provide training for some of these elements where needed to balance the skill set.

●      Programming and scripting experience, in particular Python and Shell, hands-on experience of network setup and maintenance, including SDN/NFV and MEC software stacks; hypervisors (e.g. KVM), OpenStack; OSM (or similar solutions).

●      Hands-on experience working in a collaborative, agile delivery environment

●      Demonstrated experience with modern devops and automation technologies
