IT System Support Engineer (Specialist IT)

Summary

This position will have working hours typically of 11:00 to 20:00 to provide support to global IT.

You will be joining a multi-site IT Team that is responsible for the company's IT infrastructure. You will support a mixed infrastructure of both Windows (Clients and Servers) and Linux environments in San Diego (USA) and u-blox sites around the  globe. You will be involved in supporting and evolving the core infrastructure in San Diego (mainly remotely from the UK - in US on a bi-monthly basis) and in other locations on demand. You will also be involved in the improvement of systems and processes in u-blox to meet the increasing demands of a company which is growing, both through recruitment and acquisitions. There will be some support of end-users with their workstations and the software that runs on them, and as a high tech company, this end user support is typically challenging.

Tasks:

  • Being the main IT interface for San Diego site
  • Monitoring and tackling the day to day challenges of keeping the core IT infrastructure running in San Diego sites, covering systems and technologies such as:

    • VMWare virtualized environments
    • A mixed Linux and Windows server environment
    • Storage systems and networks (SAN)
    • Network infrastructure
    • Backups and disaster recovery
    • Monitoring and Alerting
  • Collaborating with and supporting the other members of the IT Team around the world with the challenges they face day to day
  • Evolving the IT systems and infrastructure across many sites by:

    • Planning and designing new and enhanced infrastructure and solutions
    • Close collaboration with the IT Team to ensure uniform and consistent solutions over the many sites
    • Hands on fully implementing these solutions, to plan
  • Intersite travelling to support projects and their implementation (typically US sites)
  • End user support (both locally and in offices around the world) through a ticketing system, often challenging because of the highly technical R&D activities undertaken on the sites being supported, and the systems they use
  • Creation and maintenance of IT related documentation for all systems
  • Creating and improving IT processes to more efficiently provide enhanced but consistent services to the business

Requirements:

  • Professional proficiency in English (written and spoken)
  • BSc in Information Science or several years experience in IT
  • Good understanding of Linux systems essential, expert skills would be a plus
  • Good understanding of AD and Microsoft automation/collaboration tools, strong skills would be a plus
  • Broad technical skills needed to support mixed Linux and Windows, VMWare, networking and firewalls
  • Experience in an R&D support background would be a plus
  • Ability to work independently
  • Flexible and able to travel (especially to the USA)
  • Pragmatism and solution-oriented to solve issues quickly and effectively and get the job done
  • A forward thinking mindset to formulate solutions that can be applied across our many diverse sites, to support the business now and into the future
  • Good team player attitude and necesssary inter-personal skills to provide a good internal customer service
