Client facing Technology Lead – Defence and Security

Summary

We are looking for an experienced technical consultant to join a successful team in Cambridge Consultants to grow our Defence and Security business, particularly with our UK Government clients. The ideal candidate will have a successful track record of delivering technical solutions in this sector (working client side or as a supplier) and will have experience developing custom work programmes in response to specific client needs. You will have a knowledge of the challenges and opportunities that face our clients and you will be passionate about working with teams of excellent technologists.

Main purpose of the job

As a client facing Technology Lead, you will join an established team of commercial and technical experts working with a number of clients in the Defence and Security sector. You will have significant client contact and you will be expected to use the knowledge gained to steering the development of our core technology to continue to meet client needs. You will be responsible for defining work programmes and developing the commercial approach to bids. You will be expected to work on your own initiative and over time to develop your own line of business. Key client relationships and repeat business is the cornerstone of our commercial approach and your responsibilities will include an important element of client management during project delivery.

Type of work undertaken by division

The ICE Division specialises in the design and development of innovative solutions for specific client needs. Often projects start with requirements analysis of complex issues informed by our collective domain knowledge and evolve through technology to develop prototype manufacture and long-term delivery of equipment and services. The projects always incorporate considerable technical challenges.

Within the division resides our expertise in the fields of location system design, optical sensing, fluidics and data analytics signal processing. With a mixture of radio frequency engineers, analogue electronics engineers, embedded and high-level software engineers, mechanical engineers, physicists and mathematicians we can develop complete systems for clients.

The division has an exciting and diverse range of work and undertakes development projects in three other market sectors, in addition to Defence and Security:

  • Oil and Gas – high performance sensors for difficult environments
  • Consumer – innovation and product development
  • Industrial – sensors, instrumentation and control

Specific responsibilities

In time you will be responsible for all aspects of business development for an area of our UK Government Defence and Security market, working alongside other business development, project management and technical staff.

  • Identify key individuals within client organisations that are potential clients for Cambridge Consultants
  • Identify sales opportunities, work with and guide our technical teams to maximize sales conversion
  • Personally, close sales
  • Develop strong commercial relationships with key individuals within client and potential client organisations to enable further sales opportunities
  • Maintain and build a deep domain knowledge
  • Interact with teams across the whole of Cambridge Consultants in order to bring the best technology to our clients to solve their problems

You will also use your strong technical and design skills to help communicate what Cambridge Consultants can deliver to potential clients. Your background skills will also help you to make a significant contribution to the overall direction of development projects, often working on more than one concurrently.

Whilst this position is based in Cambridge, UK, there will be significant travel in the UK.

Minimum requirements

Having a strong technical education including a good degree, your career will include significant experience in an R&D or design role. You will have had some exposure to the commercial side of projects within this market area and you will possess detailed domain knowledge. You will be keen to take this experience and apply it to organisations you have previously worked with as well as new organisation to deliver new capabilities that solve our client’s biggest problems.

Previous experience of working in a consultancy, government agency or other ‘fee for service’ organisation would be an advantage, but is not mandatory.

To meet the requirements of this role you will have:

  • An excellent first degree or PhD in a technical or science discipline
  • Imaginative and inquisitive mind, eager to learn new skills and to develop solutions for interesting and complex problems
  • A commercial understanding of what’s valuable to our clients
  • Good communication skills
