CW (Cambridge Wireless Ltd) Head of Events

Summary

CW (Cambridge Wireless Ltd) is looking for an enthusiastic individual to deliver and lead a substantial business-facing event programme.

Salary range: circa £30,000 to £33,000 depending on experience.

CW is a community of over 400 technology companies, providing a forum for member organisations to meet, form partnerships and exploit opportunities for new business. 

We run a varied range of one day Special Interest Group (SIG) events for our membership along with several larger events including the main Annual Conference, the CW Technical and Engineering Conference, Discovering Start-Ups Competition and networking dinners for Founder Members. Our SIGs provide CW members with a forum where they can learn about the latest technological and market developments, debate the hot topics, promote their organisations, network with experts as well as partner with organisations and individuals. 

We are looking to recruit an experienced Head of Events to work within the busy CW office based at the new Bradfield Centre, located on the Cambridge Science Park.  

The tasks will be varied, working with a large number of individuals and organisations across the tech community, and coordinating the CW events and operations team. 

Description of role

  • Manage and oversee the delivery of CW’s annual International Conference (CWIC), and all other major CW events;
  • Manage and oversee the delivery of private events and SIG events;
  • Work with the Head of Marketing to promote events and ensure maximum attendance;
  • Liaise with sponsors and speakers to ensure relevant information is obtained for conference materials;
  • Onsite event management including management of the events team;
  • Liaison with CW members in a professional and helpful manner with the objective of building a strong and engaged community;
  • Negotiate with suppliers to reduce costs where appropriate;
  • Manage event webpages and ensure these are updated with relevant information both before and after events;
    Work with Operations Manager to plan event schedules and resource allocations, including the on-going development of the website and back office systems;
  • Contribute towards the development of CW, and carry out other duties as the need arises.

The role will be highly flexible, working across CW to meet demand for new opportunities as they emerge.

Key Accountabilities

  • Reporting directly to the CEO;
  • Working alongside the Chief Commercial Officer and the Senior Marketing and Event Manager for the Bradfield Centre;
  • Work with CW colleagues to support the agreed delivery plan endorsed by the CW Board.

Essential Skills

  • 5-7 years event management experience including the management of similar mid-large scale conferences;
  • Experience of effectively communicating with a range of stakeholders including senior engineers and business persons, conference committees, external partners, speakers and sponsors;
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail;
  • Ability to manage several projects simultaneously, to set deadlines and deliver within budget;
  • Good team working skills;
  • Excellent Word, Excel and PowerPoint skills;
  • Ability to build relationships with external clients;
  • Experience of CRM/CMS systems.

Desirable Skills

  • Good level of understanding and knowledge of some of the key technologies and practices of relevance to the role. Some knowledge and experience of the sector, including key companies and sector dynamics would be useful;
  • Project management experience;
  • Some experience of people management;
  • Experience of working in a membership organisation;
  • Ability to contribute to the writing of articles for newsletters, blogs of interest to our members;
  • Full driving licence is preferred and/or a willingness to travel on public transport
  • Some overnight stays and unsociable hours may be required from time to time.

  • Comfortable working autonomously with little supervision or as a team member as required.
