Martlet is actively investing in new ventures across a range of sectors and technologies in addition to supporting its existing portfolio companies, having backed over 50 startups since 2011. Operating in the world-renowned Cambridge technology cluster, Martlet is now seeking to add to its experienced team.

The role

The full-time role, based in Cambridge near the central train station, will offer the right candidate an excellent opportunity to build a career in the early stage investment industry. Reporting to the Senior Investment Manager, the role will provide coverage across all stages of the investment process as well as the opportunity to become immersed in technology businesses and embedded in a globally impacting entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Key responsibilities

  • Originate and analyse new investment opportunities

  • Maintain the deal flow pipeline

  • Assist with commercial due diligence on companies and industries to help with investment decisions

  • Support deal transaction processing

  • Attend various industry events as an ambassador for the company

  • Establish and develop relationships with other members of the entrepreneurial ecosystem

  • Occasional research projects leading to the output of reports and presentations

  • Keep up to date with technology trends and relevant market developments

  • General administration

Individual characteristics

  • Commercial acumen and an entrepreneurial attitude

  • Strong analytical skills and problem solving approach

  • A passion for, and understanding of, technology, business models, innovation and entrepreneurship

  • Naturally inquisitive, intellectually curious and quick to learn

  • Enthusiastic about talking to entrepreneurs and networking

  • Numerate and basic understanding of business finance

  • Meticulous attention to detail

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Proficient use of IT and systems

  • Strong organisational skills and ability to prioritise

  • Self-motivated and able to direct their own work

  • 2+ years’ experience working within the technology sector or other relevant role

  • Desirable – previous experience of working in the provision of finance to SMEs

  • Desirable – knowledge of the Cambridge technology cluster
