The AAIP is an exciting £12 million initiative funded by Lloyd's Register Foundation and the University of York to spearhead research in the safety of robotics and autonomous systems (RAS) in a range of application domains including healthcare and autonomous driving.
Role
You will be part of a vibrant and growing team of research, teaching and professional services staff, and will have the opportunity to collaborate with our research fellows and partners. You will be working on education and training on safety of RAS, and will have the opportunity to collaborate with external companies and other academic institutions (https://www.york.ac.uk/assuring-autonomy/projects/). For example, you will be working on the Advanced Topics in Safety module as part of the Department’s MSc in Safety Critical Systems Engineering. You will also be working on company specific education and training, such as courses for NHS Digital. This will allow you to play a key role in ensuring that the work of the Programme has a substantial real-world impact. You will also contribute to the development of the teaching activities of the Institute for Safe Autonomy, that is moving to a new £15M purpose-built facility housing modern experimental laboratories towards the end of 2021. The role will entail the following:
- Lecture, lead seminars, tutorials and other forms of graduate and postgraduate teaching including developing on-line materials.
- Develop and apply innovative and appropriate teaching techniques and material which create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students.
- Carry out on-going curriculum review, including teaching content and materials and contribute to the development of teaching and learning strategies.
- Undertake effectively a range of administrative and managerial responsibilities.
- Set and mark coursework and examinations.
- Advise students on academic matters.
- Collaborate with research staff to ensure teaching is informed by the latest research results.
Skills, Experience & Qualifications needed
We are looking for someone with strong technical, interpersonal and communication skills who is able to work effectively with a range of industrial and academic partners. In particular you must have:
- A first degree in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and a postgraduate degree in STEM or equivalent experience. PhD desirable.
- Knowledge of a range of teaching techniques and methodologies and sufficient knowledge of safety engineering/assurance and/or RAS technologies, such as machine learning, to provide teaching on these topics.
- Highly developed communication skills, the ability to write up research work for publication, and the ability to engage with wider audiences including the public.
- Experience of teaching and learning in an academic context or equivalent experience using different delivery methods and techniques.
- A collaborative ethos and a willingness to work pro-actively with colleagues in other work areas and institutions.
- Ability to obtain new knowledge by theoretical and/or practical methods.
- Ability to disseminate scholarly work.
This is a fixed-term post up to 31/12/2022.
