Solution Architect

Summary

As a Solution Architect, you will be acting as the design authority for projects and programmes, responsible for the compilation of the high-level architecture to support programmes and their constituent projects based on the strategic vision. This will include designing solutions directly for RSIT customers in the business and checking that the solutions built align with the as-is and to-be technical infrastructure.

Ideally, you will have a proven track record in architecting solutions using IaaS and PaaS technology components, preferably based on Microsoft Azure (IoT, Analytics, Containers, DevOps, IAM). Excellent communication skills and a sound understanding of cloud infrastructure provisioning, monitoring and billing of resources as well as cloud security standards (e.g. NIST, NCSC) is also important.

RSIT delivers smart technology for the railway of today – designing fit-for-purpose and innovative solutions across the business. We manage the day to day running of our vast IT estate, from safety related systems to hardware provision, and provide support to thousands of employees every day.

Key Accountabilities

What will you be doing?

  1. Developing solution designs in line with the RSIT strategy, standards and definitions, allowing for the appropriate integration of Network Rail’s interfaces, data and systems at a strategic level. 
  2. Setting technical standards for development of the applications solution.
  3. Engaging colleagues in other areas of RSIT to verify that the proposed design fits in with existing/proposed infrastructure, and where non-conformant, reconfiguring or seeking exception approvals.
  4. Managing stakeholder understanding and expectations regarding their application design; confirming functionality meets business needs.
  5. Using agreed application design to act as an informed buyer for applications development from third parties; validating specifications and ensuring commercial constraints are clearly communicated and understood.
  6. Directing third-party resources to develop the application, acting as a point of clarification for complex design issues, verifying that the product remains on time, cost and quality target.
  7. Verifying that programme/project related applications knowledge is shared appropriately to drive re-use of data, processes and technology where appropriate.

Job Skills, Experience & Qualifications

Do you meet the following criteria?

Essential

  • Extensive experience of working as a Technical Architect in a corporate IS function
  • Experience of delivering architecture components / compliance within an environment where systems and services are delivered via outsourced arrangements with key suppliers
  • Enterprise integration concepts and technologies
  • Middleware concepts and technologies
  • Web concepts and technologies CASE/Modelling tools
  • Networking and Operating system concepts & technologies
  • Willing and able to work in multi-disciplinary teams (RSIT colleagues, business functions, suppliers etc.) to resolve business issues and problems in a collaborative fashion

Desirable

  • Development experience within a web-based environment
  • Data Management concepts and technology
  • Process Management and workflow concepts & technologies

We adhere to a structured pay framework, any salary offered will be within the following pay range: £51,156 - £57,551 + bonus + healthcare + pension + generous annual leave allowance


Network Rail is required to comply with UK Government standards when carrying out pre-employment checks for all new starters; this includes a basic criminal record check.  In addition to the basic criminal record check, in accordance with the UK Government we are also required to verify your identity, right to work in the UK and previous three years employment history.
