Ofcom’s Spectrum Group manages the use of wireless spectrum throughout the UK to ensure that it is used efficiently. As the UK ‘s communications regulator we make spectrum available for new and innovative services such as next-generation mobile or satellite systems whilst ensuring that existing solutions like Wi-Fi and radio can continue to work. The Spectrum Engineering Group within Ofcom is central to shaping public policy and making sure that new technologies can share the airwaves with the communications that we all rely on today. 

Purpose of the Role

This is a two - year apprenticeship based at Baldock Radio Station (Hertfordshire). During your specialist training you will learn to undertake radio frequency (RF) measurements and analysis. The on the job learning and development covers  a wide range of radio communication systems and technologies including:

  • low-frequency radio
  • mmWave fixed link services
  • mobile phone services
  • satellite communications.

We test RF performance of equipment as varied as:

  • mobile phones
  • TV and Radio receivers
  • hearing aids
  • card readers
  • satellite dishes
  • vehicle radar detection systems

Projects will include laboratory based and field trials measurements, as well as analytical work in support of Spectrum Group’s policy initiatives.

Your Apprenticeship

The successful applicant will:

  • Work closely with experienced engineers in the development of new methods to test different emerging wireless technologies; and executing RF measurements using test instruments such as signal generators and spectrum analysers
  • Learn how to perform detailed analysis of results using software tools such as Python, MATLAB, SQL, etc
  • Occasionally participate in field measurements further across the country, working closely with colleagues in Assurance and Compliance roles
  • Pursue a 2- year Ofcom sponsored Engineering HNC, achieving at least a pass grade or better

Qualifications required:

  • 5 x GCSEs including English Language and Maths at grade 4 and above (or the old grade C and above)
  • And STEM Level 3 qualification(s) including at least one of:
  • 1 x A-level
  • Equivalent that qualifies for entry to an HNC engineering course.
  • Must be able to drive
