Job Area:

Engineering Group, Engineering Group > Hardware Engineering

Job Overview:

Qualcomm is a company of inventors that unlocked 5G ushering in an age of rapid acceleration in connectivity and new possibilities that will transform industries, create jobs, and enrich lives. But this is just the beginning. It takes inventive minds with diverse skills, backgrounds, and cultures to transform 5Gs potential into world-changing technologies and products. This is the Invention Age - and this is where you come in.

GENERAL SUMMARY

The position of Engineer, Staff is in Qualcomm’s Product Development and Infrastructure Department/ Radio Integration and Optimisation subdivision (PDI/RIOG). The main activities are enabling and introducing radio technologies such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chips to production quality.

The role is based in Cambridge but requires collaboration and team working with a world-wide group of engineers developing Radio Technology for all Qualcomm’s products. RIOG is part of a highly successful group. Personal communication technologies such as Bluetooth continue to evolve, offering excellent opportunities for engineers to work on cutting-edge product development.

The Radio Integration and Optimisation (RIOG) Group’s primary responsibility is for the initial bring up, verification and optimization of new radio silicon. The group consists of multi-disciplined (RF, Analogue, Software, Digital) engineers who, working closely with specialist design and systems engineers, use this broad base of knowledge to provide optimal tuning and configuration solutions for radio operation. Working at circuit, cell, subsystem and system level the RIOG team are responsible for bring up, debug, evaluation, optimization and enhancement of the radio performance of Qualcomm silicon radios. Focusing on all aspects of the silicon design that influence the performance, qualification and test of the connectivity radios, including elements of the embedded firmware for Radio Control and defining the Production Test strategy and test limits for the radio.

You will join a team of multi-disciplinary engineers in RIOG who work in close collaboration with colleagues across multiple geos. The team works in a highly dynamic environment where requirements may sometimes be uncertain or subject to change throughout the course of the project. You will be expected to take on tasks up to the level of significant features, working with others to do so, and with minimal supervision.

The candidate will be expected to follow Qualcomm’s design guidelines, become familiar with, and utilise Qualcomm’s tools and processes.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Focusing on all aspects of the silicon design that influence the performance, qualification and test of the connectivity radios, including elements of the embedded firmware for Radio Control and defining the Production Test strategy and test limits for the radio.
  • The individual blocks are verified in isolation before building into a complete radio system to include digits, firmware and analogue/RF. The Staff Engineer will be assigned to a project and be responsible for the performance and operation of the radio, interfacing directly with analogue and digital designers, systems engineers and radio control FW engineers to provide a complete radio system solution for verification and validation in characterization over temperature and process skews.
  • The Staff Engineer will be responsible for generating Python/MATLAB test scripts, writing embedded C code for FW radio control, defining radio production test limits, supporting the business group with radio training materials and investigating customer issues and product returns where required. Maintain existing test framework, including defect investigation & resolution. This may require debug of issues affecting products in or near to mass production.
  • The Staff Engineer is also expected to work on digital emulator platforms, essential knowledge of digital design flow, ability to read and debug RTL code.
  • Develops complex features and components of hardware designs in line with proposals or roadmaps for complex products; advises and leads the less experienced engineers working together on common testing and design tasks.
  • Troubleshoots advanced issues with radio designs and finds solutions that are documented and shared with internal cross functional teams working on related products.
  • Manages project-related activities (e.g., meetings, documentation, deliverables) between their team and other teams working on the same or similar products, operating across locations and time zones.
  • Solves complex problems in a tightly constrained environment and delivers a task of high complexity on time
  • Understands and develops methods for testing analogue circuits within a mixed signal silicon environment.
  • Ensures quality of the solution; leads engineers and work with project managers to ensure timely delivery of designs.
  • Contribute to the definition and work breakdown, including size estimation, of substantial developments
  • Design, develop, document, test and deliver resource constrained of the chip radio integration and verification, in accordance with the department’s PDI’s and Qualcomm processes
  • Conduct peer design reviews
