We announced the IoT Boost LPWAN competition on 13th December 2016 which is funded by Government, through IoTUK and the Digital Catapult, underlining the importance of IoT for the UK’s digital economy. The programme attracted a high calibre of applicants as well as mentors. Hear from Steve Watts, Founder and Director of CambridgeIQ on why he’s getting involved with this years programme.

How does this project fit with your industry?

I spent many years working through the vertical telecom sector, 2G to the notions of 5G with many detours on the way!  A few years ago, having recognised that the concept of ‘everything connected’ was going to be the next comms revolution, I focussed more on applications across different sectors.  Since then I have experienced new markets and sectors with different problems to solve such as scale, power and cost challenges – this introduced me to many new technologies and processes to solve these challenges.  This project fits into the heart of this.

What excited you about this programme?

This programme pulls lots of whiteboard thinking through to the reality of the IoT delivering real benefits to society – at a time when it is possible to enable it!  I am excited about a real IoT network delivering real benefits to real everyday challenges.  I am looking forward to seeing some brilliant innovation and some early fruit from the IoT revolution – in the heart of the city I live in!

What was your advice to SMEs applying?

Don’t get too hung up on details of specific bits of the technology or system at this point but focus on the whole (note and park the challenges) – if the idea will bring great benefits or solve a recognised problem, and there is candidate technology within the laws of physics, you will find a way.  And the first solutions will almost certainly evolve considerably…

What do you think this project will mean to Cambridge?

Cambridge is one of the most innovative hubs in the UK and the World…and also faces some tough infrastructure challenges due to its phenomenal success as a region.  Where better to bring technology and entrepreneurship together to tackle real everyday challenges and be seen as a leader in IoT.

What do you hope to achieve through mentoring?

I am always overwhelmed by the innovation and passion shown by individuals and teams taking part in programmes like this and the real benefits they ultimately deliver.  I hope I can share a little bit of my experience from across sectors and technologies to help them along while I learn more about the IoT.  I am also looking forward to working with a great set of mentors.
