Embracing Spectrum Sharing

The future of wireless: embracing spectrum sharing (ip.access).

Over recent years, mobile operators have faced falling or flatlining revenues, while the demand for enhanced indoor cellular coverage and data capacity has continued to grow at an unprecedented rate. With consumer demand for reliable indoor coverage showing no signs of slowing down and severe business implications at stake, this trend can no longer be ignored.

To effectively address this challenge, operators need solutions that can significantly reduce the capital and operational expenses of small cell deployments. To date, the strategy for deploying small cells has largely mirrored that at a macro level network, just on a smaller scale. However, small cells simply cannot provide the volume that each operator needs to meet its customers’ demands in a way that’s financially, operationally or technically viable. Business customers want the scale and ease-of-deployment that Wi-Fi vendors already deliver, but the important detail here is that operators want cellular coverage for all of their employees.

From a commercial perspective, operators can only make this work by embracing shared infrastructure and multi-operator solutions, as well as creating more opportunities for third-party partners to offer managed “as a service” solutions or for end-users to deploy their own coverage.

Shared infrastructure and spectrum for multi-operator solutions, such as ip.access’ Viper platform, can completely refashion the deployment of small cells. They have the potential to make “enterprise cellular” comparable to existing enterprises Wi-Fi market and give operators access to volume and scale that Wi-Fi vendors already achieve. This opens up a host of new commercial opportunities, eases the pain of deployment and offers a cost-effective way to capitalise on the value of licenced spectrum assets.
