Gearing up for CWIC18

Blog published by CW (Cambridge Wireless)

On the 7th June, the CW team delivered the CW International Conference at the impressive Wellcome Genome Campus.

We welcomed over 250 delegates, 20 exhibitors, 34 speakers and delivered a variety of technology track sessions, 2 plenary sessions, a 5G Debate, an Innovation Programme showcase and the day was capped off with a gala dinner with Dr Peter Cochrane.

Organising an event like CWIC requires bucket loads of energy and determination; of which plenty was given by this year’s conference committee! Simon Fletcher of Real Wireless is the conference Chair – here’s what he had to say about this years event:

Connecting Generations as a theme provided a useful canvas over which different session chairs and presenters could give their views on some of the challenges that industry is seeing today, and highlight future trends and opportunities. The objective of giving attendees the opportunity to take a broader strategic view on the key themes was well and truly met; for me a good measure of this is the quality of attendee interaction with the panels, which was very high.

Tell me more about the Innovation Programme

The Innovation Showcase, sponsored by Ansys, Iotic Labs and u-blox Ltd, kicked-off in March 2017 with 4 CWIC Starters providing an opportunity for businesses to highlight key challenge areas. Start-ups were invited to join the programme to share, collaborate and improve their ideas or propositions that linked with the 4 topics underpinning CWIC:

• Immersive
• Transport & Mobility
• Healthcare

This year’s Innovation Programme welcomed 12 exciting start-ups (view them here) with the workshops hosted and supported by Ravensbourne UniRunway EastWayra and the KTN.

The teams have been given access to an Iotic Labs ‘Town Square’ of data, where they can securely share and access a variety of new data sources. Ansys and u-blox have provided an array of hardware prototyping platforms to help teams test & experiment their ideas. Many have new ideas, access to new data, and new ways to demonstrate their product.

What is next for CWIC?

So now that the 9th iteration of the CW annual conference has been and gone…. what’s in the pipeline for next year?

Previous conference themes

Over the next few weeks, the committee will be absorbing the delegate feedback and a new plan of action will be set in motion for 2018 activity. Bob Driver of CW can tell us a bit more:

The CW annual international conference has grown from strength to strength over the years, covering a variety of topics, but what is common for each iteration of the event is a broad coverage of the connected world, with sessions that are genuinely thought provoking and a great showcase for innovation. Like with all CW events, the event content is put together by committed CW members on behalf of the technology industry, and we are extremely grateful for this input. Work will start soon on the design for the 10th conference in 2018, and we will shortly be deciding on the overarching theme. We always listen carefully to the feedback from our members, and the strong message has been to keep the conference in the Cambridge area. CWIC 2018 is therefore scheduled to occur at Hinxton Hall on the 4th July 2018 – please ensure your diary is free!
