What is 5G - and why is it so important?

5G will be one of the most important enablers to the 4th Industrial Revolution - but it must be a "pull" model from these innovative business domains rather than a "push" model from the telecommunication industry. Good, clear and constistent communication and conversations will be vital.

The world has not yet really woken up to the fact that we are already well into the 4th Industrial Revolution. Previous "Revolutions" were driven by water power, electrical power and finally information technology. This current revolution is being fuelled by Autonomy, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and the societal implications of these technologies will be extreme.

Digital Manufacturing, Autonomous Vehicles, Open Banking and Fintech Innovation are some of the new business domain opportunities that are emerging on the back of the tectonic shifts that we are seeing. There will be many more.

So how will these new ideas be delivered - and at scale. Fibre to the Premises reaching many Gbps will be an important vector but new mobile communications will be equally vital. Mobile Communications in the shape of 5G will be the infrastructure that will ignite this revolution and power it going forward.

Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) Massive Machine Type Communications (mMTC) and Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communications (uRLLC) are the capabilities that will be provided.

Unless you have an Engineering Degree the technical aspects of 5G will be difficult to understand - which means that this revolution will be a "Pull" rather than a "Push". Cambridge Wireless is leading the development of the 5G Innovation ecosysytem in the UK and a number of Business Domain experimentation trials are being been set up.

If you are working with any of the 4th Industrial Revolution business domains it is really important that you ask - what difference will 5G make to my strategic roadmap.

I am an active member of Cambridge Wireless and will take an "investigative" interest in 5G developments - particularly those aspects that impact my Business Domains

This is a fantastic opportunity!!
