Take the complexity out of Wideband Radio System Design - Mindy Bejawn, Field Applications Engineer at Anglia introduces a portfolio of integrated products from Analog Devices

Member News published by Anglia, under PR, Radio Technologies

In any Wireless Communication System, the critical part of the design is the complex technology required to achieve a suitable radio solution. With an exponential growth in data rates and connectivity, in most cases this solution will be a wideband radio system. Designing such systems is a daunting and complicated task, requiring the talents of highly experienced RF engineers. Most would agree that this is one of the most demanding elements of the design that one could undertake, but such engineers are also an expensively scarce resource and only needed for a limited time. A solution would be to simplify the process into literally a plug and play activity.

Mindy Bejawn, Field Applications Engineer at Anglia introduces a portfolio of integrated products from Analog Devices which can help to greatly simplify this RF design process and reduce the overall time needed to deploy a fully tested and certified radio communications system. Expert support from Anglia’s experienced team can further simplify and speed up the development process.

The Analog Devices RadioVerse™ product portfolio includes advanced and innovative RF and mixed-signal solutions which target applications where robust performance, low power consumption, and small footprint are critical. The product range leverages Analog Devices many years of expertise in radio architectures, signal processing, circuit design and semiconductor process technologies, to drive breakthroughs in RF connectivity, drastically reducing time to market and total cost while meeting the tough technical challenges that Design Engineers face.

RadioVerse™ products are designed to allow designers to circumvent the pitfalls and necessary experience associated with a wideband RF Transceiver design that traditionally used discrete components. Hence, a complex Software Defined Radio (SDR) architecture implementation which would have previously required an experienced RF Engineer designing the RF signal chain can now be implemented simply by using a single chip and a few supporting ICs. This work could be carried out by an Engineer with just rudimentary RF experience.

Customers who are looking for a range of radio solutions are offered a relatively hassle-free route to an implementation without the need to get involved in a complicated design cycle. The RadioVerse™ product range provides benefits to customers with a faster time to market and a cost-effective solution to those constrained by tight R&D budgets. Analog Devices solutions cover a wide variety of wireless communication systems in radio technology, whether it is for the cellular, autonomous vehicles, industrial, 5G, aerospace, defence or any other markets looking for a radio solution.

RadioVerse™ products are split into 2 categories: SDR Integrated Wideband Transceivers and Ultra-Low Power Transceivers for IoT.

SDR Integrated Wideband Transceivers

The SDR Integrated Wideband Transceivers cover a frequency range of between 70MHz and 6GHz as shown in Table 1. These ICs are available in single, dual, or quad Transceiver architectures offering designers flexibility of use in digital transceivers operating in either TDD (Time Division Duplex) or FDD (Frequency Division Duplex) modes.

Table 1.

Analog Devices range of SDR transceivers provide a high dynamic range and blocker tolerance for narrow and wideband signals that is one of the best in the industry. There are several offerings available from the high-end ADRV9008 and ADRV9026 Transceivers with their wide 450MHz bandwidth and multi-Transmitter & Receiver architectures through to parts from the lower end of the spectrum with the AD9384 device that has a narrower, 56MHz bandwidth and single Transmitter & Receiver configuration. The comprehensive range of SDR transceivers on offer from Analog Devices allow designers to realise solutions from the most basic to the most demanding of radio applications without having to compromise on performance and cost while also keeping the design real estate to a minimum.

Ultra-Low Power Transceivers for IoT

The RadioVerse™ portfolio of ultra-low power integrated transceivers have been designed specifically for demanding IoT applications that require ultra-low power connectivity while maintaining high performance and reliability.

Table 2.

The ultra-low power devices support a broad range of frequency bands and communications protocols such as 802.15.4g, Wi-SUN, Wireless M-Bus Mode N, S, T, C, ZigBee and 6LoWPA. They cover the broad range of frequencies in the licence free band specifically 169MHz, 433MHz, 450MHz, 470MHz, 868MHz, 915MHz and 950MHz as shown in Table 2.

These devices are suited for use in a wide range of applications such as Sensing, Smart Metering, Smart City or Smart Healthcare and many more areas where low power and reliable connectivity is required.

Design Support

Analog Devices offer a complete ecosystem of support for the RadioVerse™ portfolio via a comprehensive range of software, simulation tools, evaluation boards and prototyping platforms, there are even full radio solutions available that further ease the radio design implementation into a customer’s product.

In addition, Anglia’s engineering team have extensive experience of working with radio designs and can provide valuable product demonstrations, insight, advice, and component recommendations for your application. This expertise is available to support customers with all aspects of their designs, offering hands on hardware and software design support along with access to the aforementioned extensive resource of design tools and technical application notes from Analog Devices.

For customers who may require further support we can also put you in touch with the Analog Devices approved radio technology global partnership network that can help accelerate designs forward.
