This online SIG from the Radio Technology Group was aimed at all engineers working with communications in difficult or crowded environments, and anyone who wants to keep up to date with smart radio developments.

"Is this frequency in use ?" can still be heard on the bands used by radio amateurs. But as spectrum becomes ever more crowded, radio systems have had to be adaptable to make best use of the available bandwidth, to optimise capacity and enable changes in the way that spectrum regulators are managing the crowded spectrum.

This event provided an introduction into how AI is being applied to radio communications. It covered both controlled networks, such as cellular, and also radios for use in license free or license exempt bands. A specific aspect is Cognitive Radio (sometimes referred to smart radio) and how AI can improve performance such as throughput, resilience and avoidance of interference to other users.
