Next generation engineers see worth of Future of Wireless International Conference

The five winners of Cambridge Wireless’ FWIC ticket Giveaway for Millennials reflect on why the conference is important to the industry and what’s in it for young engineers

In a bid to support the next generation of the telecoms industry, the not-for-profit industry forum, Cambridge Wireless – that boasts a network of almost 400 member organisations  involved in the development and application of wireless technologies –  gave away five tickets to its annual Future of Wireless International Conference 2013 (FWIC).

In no more than 100 words entrants, who had to be under 30, working in technology across the UK, explained how the conference theme, The Internet of Things,  would be of interest to them and their organisation. The successful candidates who attended the two-day conference were Saul Wiggin, Student at Queen Elizabeth University of London; Brice Fernandes, Junior Software Engineer of Cambridge Broadband Networks; Sylvia Lu, Standards Engineer of u-blox; Pablo Hernandez, Graduate Engineer of ARM; and Ross Davison, Graduate Engineer of Atkins Global.

Almost 400 key mobile industry players, academics and advisors from 25 countries  descended on Cambridge at the start of the month for the 5th Future of Wireless International Conference, to discuss the future of the ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT) and who will be the beneficiaries of 50 billion connected devices.

“The conference provided a fantastic platform for me to gain a better understanding of the pre-standardisation and market requirements from leading network service providers, chipset and UE vendors, and hear about the obstacles they see in the M2M/MTC standardisation process. It was interesting to see how to overcome the concerns regarding security and privacy from the user perspective and how the harmonisation of the fragmented IoT ecosystem requires attention from both governments and regulatory bodies on a global scale,” says winner Sylvia Lu, Standards Engineer at u-blox. “From a u-blox’ perspective as a chipset/module vendor, these insights will be useful for us to bring our low cost & low power LTE solutions to the market. I believe this will guide me to bring high quality and realistic proposals into the standards bodies in the very near future.”

Speakers included Warren East, outgoing CEO of ARM; Seigmund Redl, Vice President and General Manager Corporate Marketing Europe, MediaTek; John Cunliffe, CTO Ericsson Western & Central Europe; Steve Townsend, Group CIO, Transport for London; Frank Mackel, UK Managing Director, Rohde & Schwarz; Moray Rumney, Lead Technologist, Agilent Technologies; Paul Green, Technology & Marketing Director, Arkessa; Nello Cristianini, Professor of Artificial Intelligence, University of Bristol; Andy Bovingdon, VP Product Marketing, Bango; Robin Duke-Woolley, Beecham Research; Dr Ekta Sood, Head of Products, Hildago; Rob Barnes, Senior Director, Java Product Management, Oracle; Stephen Deadman, Head of Legal Privacy, Vodafone.

Ross Davison, Graduate Engineer of Atkins, who also won his place commented, "Attending FWIC2013 has been a great experience allowing me to gain insight into the changing landscape of how devices are connected. This event has built on my technical knowledge and increased my awareness of the security, privacy and regulatory issues that affect strategy choices. The event embraced technology to encourage networking and was in a great location. The choice of speakers gave the audience food for thought and promoted discussion."

Next year’s FWIC will be taking place on 30th June & 1st July 2014 at the Moller Centre, in Cambridge.
