FCEDA Annual Report Demonstrates Wealth of Opportunities

“A Truly Extraordinary Year” Says President

The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority in Virginia, USA (www.fairfaxcountyeda.org), which recently joined Cambridge Wireless, has just released its annual report for last year which shows tremendous growth as well as demonstrating the many opportunities for overseas as well as American firms.

More than 70 UK companies are located in the County.

Dr Gerald Gordon, President and CEO of the FCEDA, says: “For Fairfax County and for the Economic Development Authority 2010 was a truly extraordinary year.”

Dr Gordon explains that while large corporations are important for communities, they are not the whole story; “in fact, most of the companies the FCEDA works with in any given year are small.”

Consider these facts about employers, he points out, that located to or expanded in Fairfax County during 2010. Of the 154 companies with which the FCEDA worked in 2010 and that made location announcements:

  • 99 are domestically owned, 43 are foreign-owned; 12 are small, women-owned, minority-owned or veteran-owned;
  • 78 (50.7 percent) of the companies announced 10 or fewer jobs and another 48 (31.2 percent) announced between 11 and 50 jobs brought to or retained in Fairfax County;
  • Only 13 (8.4 percent) announced between 51 and 100 jobs and another 15 (9.7 percent) announced more than 100 positions.

“A healthy economy in most communities includes large and small businesses,” says Dr Gordon. “The growth of so many small and large companies in Fairfax County in 2010 implies an economic base that has greater stability and sustainability than virtually any other in the United States.”
