Ofcom announce 5G & Future Technology Spectrum Event

On Thursday March 12th Ofcom will be hosting an important debate to explore the impact of new mobile and wireless broadband technologies, including those underpinning 5G, on spectrum regulation and management. To find out more about the event please visit - http://stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk/spectrum/spectrum-events/

What does Ofcom need to do to support the development and deployment of new mobile broadband technologies, whilst taking account of other spectrum users?

Please join us for an important debate as we explore the impact of new mobile and wireless broadband technologies, including those underpinning 5G, on spectrum regulation and management.

The event will follow our Call for Input on use of bands above 6 GHz. Responses received will inform and contribute to the event discussions – and the event discussion, in turn, will help to inform our views going forward at a European and international level in the coming months.

Agenda Overview

Introduced by Ofcom’s Spectrum Policy Group Director, Philip Marnick, keynotes and panel discussions will be provided by those whose work is well underway in thinking about the future uses for the next generation of wireless technology and how that might be delivered.

Speakers and panellists include mobile network & satellite operators, vendors, academics, regulators and industry bodies.

There will be three panel discussions posing a number of questions:

  • Future Spectrum Needs – What sort of spectrum will be needed and how much?
  • Technology Solutions –What ways are there to meet demand and can technology enable spectrum ‘sharing’
  • Delivering Spectrum - How should it be made available, what should we do with existing holdings/new holdings?

Academic Research

In addition to the keynotes and panel discussions, we are providing PhD students, from Surrey, Bristol and KINGS, space to show the work they are doing into 5G and future technology.  Event participants can access the PhD displays throughout the day in our breaks.

Event Times and Location

The event will open on Thursday 12th March with a networking lunch for participants. The first session will begin at 9:30am. We will host the event at Ofcom, Riverside House, 2a Southwark Bridge Road, London SE1 9HA.
