From Promise to Practice: The Ongoing 5G Journey

This event will review how the 5G journey is progressing and explore whether the most valuable capabilities of 5G are still ahead of us.

5G first appeared in a handful of UK cities in the summer of 2019. Since then, both the availability of 5G services and subscriber uptake have grown considerably, but has the technology lived up to its early promises?

The Service-Based Architecture (SBA) of 5G was expected to enable a range of customisable service offerings, each with guaranteed performance levels. This vision was tied closely to new revenue opportunities among industrial and enterprise customers, moving beyond the traditional consumer services model.

In practice, however, 5G’s impact has been more incremental than transformational. Mobile network operators have largely used it to expand capacity and improve efficiency in delivering consumer services against a relatively flat revenue base. As a result, the path to return on investment has been slower than anticipated, with 5G proving to be a longer-term strategic commitment for many operators.

In this event we will review how the 5G journey is progressing and explore whether the most valuable capabilities of 5G are still ahead of us.

We’ll ask:
  • Has 5G simply become a route to greater capacity and lower cost per MB for business as usual consumer services?
  • To what extent has 5G standalone been rolled out and what impact has it had?
  • Is network slicing being meaningfully adopted, or will it be? What use cases and variants of slicing are gaining traction in real deployments?
  • Is the rollout of 5G equipment and infrastructure largely complete, or is there more to come?
  • What work remains to fully transition networks toward virtualised architectures?
  • Are all the key infrastructure elements now in place to support the transition to  5G Advanced, 6G and more AI?
