Boards are vital to the success of any company, no matter its type or size. An effective board:

• Provides strategic guidance to the management team
• Makes sure that the company is run properly
• Adds entrepreneurial flair, inspiration and direction
• Gives investors confidence in its strategic direction and governance

But boards don’t always work as well as they should. Fewer than a third of companies say they have a good board. Four in five say their board isn’t diverse enough and nine out of ten say at least one member of their board should be replaced.

So there’s plenty of work to be done for boards to fulfil their true purpose.
