From discovery science to industrial applications: Understand the machinery of life, and get there faster: Probing proteins in small volumes (a Cambridge Network & Maxwell Centre event)

About the event

The talk will outline recent work by the Department of Chemistry in developing microfluidic platforms for studying proteins in their native environment in solution. Our speaker, Prof Tuomas Knowles, will discuss some specific features of microfluidics which open up new possibilities for protein characterisation.  He will show examples where this platform has allowed them to probe particularly challenging and heterogeneous protein systems.

He will then focus on their efforts to translate this technology into instrumentation usable by the wider community through a start-up company, Fluidic Analytics 

About Professor Tuomas Knowles
Professor Knowles holds a personal Professorship in the Department of Chemistry and at the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge and is also a Fellow of St John’s College Cambridge. His current research interests are focused on using physical approaches to study the self-assembly of protein molecules both in the context of biological function and malfunction.
