UK Space Agency Invites Applications From UK Companies For The 'Opening Space with 5G' and '5G Hub at Harwell'

Press Release published by CGI, under 5G

The UK Space Agency, supported by CGI, has just announced a funding round for Opening Space with 5G and is inviting applications for UK support for both the “Opening Space with 5G” and “5G Hub at Harwell” Calls, from UK companies looking to develop technologies, products, and services in 5G telecommunications.

The first call, “Opening Space with 5G”, will make up to £8,000,000 of funding available for proposals from both industry and academia to develop sustainable 5G technologies, products and services that will benefit beyond the Space Sector. No upper or lower limit has been set for individual projects.

The second call, “5G Hub at Harwell”, will make up to £1,000,000 available for up to five projects, capped at £200,000 each, from industry and academia to utilise the 5G/6G Hub to test and demonstrate their 5G devices or applications. These projects will be managed under the ESA Agile model and will follow a shorter time to contract.

This 5G Hub call provides both industry and academia the opportunity to test and then demonstrate their 5G devices or applications across a private hybrid SA/NSA satellite network, which supports both GEO and LEO connections. These could relate to a variety of sectors or areas of industry; some examples include, but are not limited to:

  • Healthcare
  • Energy
  • Resilience or Critical National Infrastructure
  • Manufacturing

This Call invites UK industry to submit proposals for new technologies or services, with individual applications limited to a maximum of £200,000. It is expected that successful proposals will lead to a demonstration of the capability in the Hub and the generation of promotional material.
