Making waves: gesture-based communications system- New SBRI Competition
There are many scenarios where learners with disabilities lack independence due to an inability to communicate by speech or due to lack of motor control. Communication may involve having to write down or manually input information into a device. This may be manageable for communicating simple concrete things to people who are physically close, however for more complex communication requirements it may be inadequate, slow and ultimately disabling.
If gestures can be easily learned, recognized and converted to digital data, a whole new world of opportunity is opened up. Gestures need not only be converted to text or audio output, they could equally be converted to electronic command signals so that learners with limited motor control could live more independently.
This SBRI competition will open on 7th January 2011, and is being run by JISC TechDis, the leading UK educational advisory service in the fields of technology and inclusion.
