Smart Cities Conference : Wednesday 30th October 2013

UK Trade & Investment is hosting the British Business Pavilion (BBP) at the 9th World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) taking place at the ExCel in London from the 29-31 October 2013. The WIEF is a global forum that brings together Muslim and non-Muslim communities through business. This is the first time the WIEF has been held outside of Asia and it will be the most ambitious yet, with a dozen Heads of State or Government expected to attend. The British Business Pavilion will showcase the UK’s global offer and expertise in creating smart cities of the future and will flow seamlessly from the headline WIEF sessions. It will bring together British companies and international decision makers from a range of high growth markets.

By 2050, 75% of the world’s population is expected to live in cities. Cities occupy only 2% of the earth’s land, yet account for 60-80% of energy consumption. The Smart Cities BBP event on 30 October will demonstrate how the UK’s ICT, SMART technology and construction, transportation and environmental expertise are combining to drive the creation of low carbon future cities.

The Smart Cities conference on 30 October will explore how governments, industry and standards boards can work together to address the challenges of rapid urbanisation and explore different policy approaches for the developed and developing world alike. The sessions will facilitate interactive discussion between experts in the field, decision makers and solution providers focusing on 
  •  the built environment
  • energy and smart grids
  • water management
  • sustainable urban development
  • the role of technology as an enabler
