Head of Business Performance

Summary

AstraZeneca has the ambition to have a meaningful, positive impact on over 200 million patients by 2025. The Science and Enabling Units IT organisation will play an increasingly key role in this through delivery a competitive advantage through data, digital and running IT brilliantly.

Reporting to the Head of Change and Operations, the Head of Business Performance will lead the following core disciplines within the Science and Enabling Units IT organisation.:

  • Annual and Long-Range strategic business planning (including financial)
  • Performance management and reporting (including scorecard, delivery, risk)
  • Strategy to Portfolio planning and governance
  • Operating Model optimisation and embedding
  • Leadership Team and functional operational effectiveness (including administration)
  • Internal and external communication and engagement

Candidate Focus and Challenge

A key member of the global leadership team, the Head of Business Performance will lead a small team driving the operational effectiveness of the Science and Enabling Units IT team. This is an “Office of the CIO” type function focused on strategy, governance, performance management and reporting and ways of working. An experienced IT leader, this role requires an individual who has a strategic, business perspective combined with a pragmatic and willing to take action. You will be a credible business partner (within IT and across our business functions), who is used to sustaining effective relationships at senior levels. You will be driven by achieving clear, measurable business outcomes, with a relentless drive for delivering sustainable improvement in the effectiveness and employee engagement of the global team.

As Head of Business Performance you will be accountable for:

  • Leading annual strategic business planning processes (with functional IT Heads, Architecture and Delivery Leads) leading to an agreed investment plan.
  • Leading all aspects of business performance including crafting and implementing the annual balanced scorecard and objectives.
  • Aligning and “connecting the dots” across the function to ensuring an integrated and holistic performance plan.
  • Tracking, managing and communicating the annual strategic plan and objectives including delivery and risk, resource utilization, and budget.
  • Providing performance data and insights to support timely and effective decision-making by the Leadership Team.
  • Owning and developing the operating model and acting to deliver continuous improvement in the effectiveness of the organisation.
  • Leading the day to day “operations” of the Science and Enabling Units IT organisation and Leadership Team meeting agendas/effectiveness.
  • Developing and delivering an effective functional communications and engagement plan including Town Hall meetings, presentations and social media presence.
  • Building influential partner relationships at LT level, to appropriately drive focus and priorities on the right things for strategic success.
  • Establishing and developing a team by attracting high calibre talent from within and outside the organization and providing appropriate opportunities and support

Education, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Essential:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent educational experience
  • Extensive experience recruiting, building and leading global teams and delivering business outcomes
  • Experienced in driving “best in class” operational delivery and organisational performance
  • Communication, engagement and influencing skills operating at senior executive levels
  • Credibility with peers and business leaders for understanding key business problems
  • Ability to manage ambiguity and build transparency of direction and next steps

Desirable

  • Master’s degree and or business MBA
  • Demonstrated experience in life sciences, healthcare, or another related field
  • Project and Portfolio Management
  • Experience in operating model development
  • Organisational change management
  • Financial acumen
