How long has your company been in operation, and what was the inspiration for its founding?

We launched in 2013 in partnership with the Eden Project. Our CEO and Founder Steve Malkin began Planet Mark as a truly effective, people-driven sustainability certification for any organisation of any size, in any sector, anywhere in the world.

Steve is known for his unquenchable optimism. On becoming a Dad, he realised that he needed to use his talents to do his bit to protect society and future generations from climate change. Steve is dedicated to leading every business to be the energy for great change in the world, and he has inspired many to make every action they take be a force for good. Steve is very proud to say he loves his job.

What is special about your company’s products / services?

Planet Mark differs from other sustainability certifications by offering a unique and simple three-step process that supports members achieve their sustainability goals (Measure, Engage, Communicate).

These three-steps go beyond measurement of your carbon footprint; they help you to engage your entire business, as well as communicate your sustainability strategy more broadly.

We are committed to driving change at scale. On average, Planet Mark certified businesses make a 24% cut in absolute carbon emissions per year, 17% carbon saving per employee per year through reductions in energy, waste, water, travel and procurement. 99% of our members achieve their targets in order to renew their certification year-on-year

Where does your company see its industry heading in the next ten years?

Awareness and commitment to sustainability is rising exponentially among organisations and communities all over the world. In the next ten years this is only going to increase and the regulatory requirements upon businesses will become more stringent. Sustainability reporting will become as normal as financial reporting and companies will need to demonstrate credible track record of progress in order to gain and keep customers.

Where does your company see itself heading in the next ten years?

We are continuing to develop our capacities as a ‘one stop shop’ for supporting organisations with their sustainability. As well as providing our robust 3rd party verificaftion and certification, we provide a wide range of advisory services, from net zero strategy development, to energy audits and real estate certification. Our technology platforms will continue to develop to make sustainability action easier and more impactful.

What is your company currently working on?

We have a big focus on developing our underlying technology and systems at the moment to make the process of certification even easier and faster for our Members. In the coming year we will be launching new dashboard and methods for data entry that will help our community to gain even more insights that will help them take action and make impressive progress on emissions reductions.

Which among your recent announcements is your company most proud of?

The launch of our Net Zero Programme. The Planet Mark Net Zero Programme incorporates our core principles of comprehensive carbon footprinting, annual certification, effective strategy setting and employee engagement.

Our six-stage Programme builds on these core principles to enable you to set and deliver a credible net zero plan. The Programme aligns with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) Corporate Net-Zero Standard which delivers against the 1.5°C pathway global warming target set out in the 2015 Paris Agreement.

How would you describe your company culture?

We are a passionate team who care deeply about the work that we do to help our Members have a positive impact on the world through sustainability. We have fully embraced flexible working, with our team working remotely bar an office day once per week. This year we piloted and then rolled out a 9-day fortnight, giving everyone in the business every other Friday off to strike a better balance in their work and personal lives – it has been incredibly popular and had benefits for our productivity.

Who is your CEO and what is their background?

Steve Malkin is the Founder and CEO of Planet Mark.

Steve created and launched the Planet Mark to work with organisations to positively transform society, the environment and economy to create a brighter, more sustainable future for us and our planet.

Steve was an early evangelist for addressing climate change, having worked in sustainability since 2005 and launching Planet Mark in 2013. Steve has worked with hundreds of businesses globally to harness their drive for meaningful change. By adopting net zero goals and reducing their carbon emissions, alongside the measurement of their social value, businesses are putting society and the future of our planet at the heart of what they do.

As a true optimist, Steve is known for the powerful way in which he communicates the climate crisis - not only by acknowledging the realities but also conveying hope for positive change.  He is a particular advocate for the role small and medium sized businesses can make in our transition to net zero and has masterminded the government-supported Zero Carbon Tour to encourage greater awareness and commitment to sustainability in towns, cities and communities across the UK. Steve has also supported and provided advice to the leaders of listed and large private companies on how they can contribute to the low carbon transition as well as inspire and unlock the passion of their employees to support the net zero journey.

Steve is father to three boys and lives in East Sussex. He has a B.Eng in Civil Engineering having studied at what is now the University of Greenwich.
