R&S CMW270 WiMAX™ communication tester – throughput testing that surpasses the limits

Munich, December 03, 2009 — Mobile WiMAX™ in line with IEEE802.16e provides wireless Internet access at high data rates. The maximum data rate for a Mobile WiMAX™ device is a critical test for designers in R&D, product verification labs and network operators. During the latest test trials the R&S CMW270 WiMAX™ communication tester from Rohde & Schwarz acting as the Mobile WiMAX™ base station emulator reached a data rate of approx. 36 Mbit/s, the maximum rate ever experienced in real network operation. It surpasses the highest user datagram protocol (UDP) throughput rate of 30.6 Mbit/s that users will experience in a real network with WiMAX™ 2x2 MIMO (matrix B) operating at 10 MHz with 64QAM 5/6 modulation by almost 20 %.

Network operators and end users require maximum data throughput for typical IP-based applications with their WiMAX™ mobile terminals. To detect possible throughput limitations, the communications data handling between the base station and the mobile terminal must be thoroughly analyzed. The R&S CMW270 WiMAX™ communication tester features the ideal performance to meet this test requirement without any bottlenecks in the internal physical (PHY) and media access control (MAC) layers.

The maximum rate of approx. 36 Mbit/s that the R&S CMW270 provides is possible due to the unique optimized mode feature. When this mode is enabled, the burst allocation resources for broadcasting the signal are reduced. This frees up additional resources in line with the IEEE standard for data packet transmission, i.e. it increases throughput by approx. 20 %.

As a result, design engineers of WiMAX™ mobile terminals can analyze the performance of devices at a higher data rate than will ever be experienced in normal operation.
