Ely's Signal Struggles to the Future of Network Design
A recent BBC article highlighted a challenge that will be familiar to many people across Cambridgeshire: poor mobile connectivity.

One proposed solution is the deployment of small cells, which can be installed on existing structures to improve coverage in areas where traditional mobile masts may be impractical.

The result is a balancing act: how do we deliver the high-quality connectivity that residents, businesses and visitors expect, while maintaining the visual and environmental integrity of the places they live and work?
It's a question that is becoming increasingly important as networks evolve and demand for capacity continues to grow.
Reimagining Network Infrastructure
These are some of the key questions our upcoming Mobile Networks Special Interest Group event, Innovation in Cell Site Aesthetics: Designing the Invisible Network, will explore on 29 September at St Catharine's College, Cambridge.
The event will explore how the industry can create the next generation of cell sites using innovative infrastructure approaches, without compromising the visual and environmental integrity of the communities they serve.
From stealth towers and concealed antennas to integrated street furniture and building-mounted solutions, speakers will examine how engineering, design and planning can work together to improve public acceptance and accelerate deployment.
Importantly, the discussion goes beyond simply hiding infrastructure. It focuses on developing practical approaches that enable operators, planners, local authorities and communities to collaborate more effectively, transforming potential objections into opportunities for innovation.

The afternoon will bring together experts from across the connectivity ecosystem to explore the challenges highlighted by the Ely story from multiple perspectives.
Paul Rhodes, Head of Strategy at Evolved Networks and Cambridge Wireless SIG Champion, will open with an introduction to the topic and cover why The Public only See ‘Aesthetically Challenged’ Mobile Sites.
Jenny Obee, Information & Digital Technology Director at Related Argent, will share a property developer's perspective on the opportunities and challenges of building connectivity into new developments from the outset.
Planning considerations will be explored by Laurence Moore, Senior Planning Officer at the Greater Cambridge Shared Planning Service, who will discuss the importance of high-quality design in the public realm and the benefits that effective telecommunications access can bring to communities and places.
Chris Stratton, Director at Communication Property Services, will examine the importance of collaboration, respect and understanding in infrastructure deployment and the Town & Country Planning process, drawing on real-world case studies to demonstrate what happens when stakeholders work together and the consequences when they don't.
The conversation then turns to infrastructure design itself. David Gilligan, CTO at Constant Group, will challenge perceptions in his session Telecom Infrastructure is Ugly?, exploring whether telecommunications infrastructure really deserves its reputation, the hidden beauty that can be found in network design, and how the industry can improve the way new sites are delivered and approved.
As demand for capacity continues to grow, Ian Goetz, CTO EMEA at Parallel Wireless, will discuss how changing traffic patterns, increasing capacity demands and emerging use cases such as connected and autonomous vehicles are reshaping network requirements. His session will explore how carefully designed RAN systems can support densification while making use of existing city infrastructure in ways that are both aesthetically pleasing and practical to deploy.
Nick Wiggin, Partnerships Director at Wireless Infrastructure Group, will then explore why shared outdoor small-cell infrastructure could play an increasingly important role in delivering connectivity in urban environments.
The event concludes with a panel discussion featuring all speakers, providing attendees with an opportunity to ask questions and explore practical solutions to the challenges facing network deployment today.
