ViewRanger is delighted to be helping Matt Baker with his Rickshaw Challenge for Children in Need, by providing real-time location tracking. Using the BuddyBeacon feature of the ViewRanger mobile app, Matt's supporters and the public can follow live progress of his epic journey by rickshaw from Edinburgh to London, which started earlier today.

Matt’s progress can be viewed live at

Matt’s rickshaw is kitted out with a smartphone to allow him to share his location to the web as well as for him to be able to attach twitter messages and images to the visual record of his journey as it unfolds.

The award winning ViewRanger mobile app (Apple, Android & Nokia Symbian compatible) is the perfect solution, as it is used and trusted by over 50% of Search & Rescue teams in England & Wales, with its location sharing feature BuddyBeacon being a key benefit to enable team coordination. Similarly, it will help to ensure Matt’s support team and camera crew with ViewRanger on their phones will be able to get to the right place at the right time along the route.

ViewRanger’s BuddyBeacon works by transmitting the location of Matt and his Rickshaw using the mobile network. The system allows this to be received by other ViewRanger users or via the web. Whilst Matt’s location will be visible to anyone, users can choose to protect who can view their location using a PIN code, so that it can only be seen by those that have the PIN code. It works globally (where mobile coverage is available) and can be used for peace of mind, meeting up or just for fun.

ViewRanger is also a powerful GPS navigation tool designed for cyclists and walkers. Matt’s planned route has been loaded onto the app and will also help with accurate navigation along the way. Every mile of Matt’s epic 484 mile journey will be visible via the website, his schedule is:

Day 1 - Edinburgh to Hawick (53.5 Miles) Day 2 - Hawick to Hexham (59.2 Miles) Day 3 - Hexham to Barnard Castle (49.0 Miles) Day 4 - Barnard Castle to York (70.6 Miles) Day 5 - York to Lincoln (78.0 Miles) Day 6 - Lincoln to Peterborough (73.2 Miles) Day 7 - Peterborough to Cambridge (41.0 Miles) Day 8 - Cambridge to London (59.3 Miles)

They’ll be an opportunity to cheer him on each day at the start and finishing line each day. But the tracking website will mean that people can track his progress with images and messages.

His journey is to raise funds for Children in Need. To donate £5, text "MATT" to 70705, texts cost £5 plus one standard rate message, £5 will go to BBC Children in Need.
